Both approaches continue to evolve. Digital is obviously evolving faster (with the inherent risk of more specific extinctions), but film has a huge running start. If I wanted specific answers how to do
it the other way, I'd use a PM or appropriate forum. But just like digital image mgt deliberately mimics
the objectives and even terminology of film technique, there's no prevention of the equation working
the opposite direction. They can do it that way - we can do it this way. The idea that it "can't" be
done in film is often a generalization that it hasn't been tried, or that the approach to the problem
has simply been forgotten. With color neg masking in particular, it was simply a matter of finding a
convenient and reliable very low-contrast mask also having a very long-straight line. The old Pan
Masking film wouldn't provide that, and I got lucky discovering a modern solution. So suddenly the
versatility of these newest films is greatly expanded. But some of the options were admittedly conceived when someone told me how it was done digitally, and I applied the analogy.

Sadly, some people always view anything new as a threat rather than an opportunity. I started with analog photography in the early '50s and have worked with everything from subminiture to 4x5. As an engineer, I love technology; and that includes embracing new technology as well as old technology.

  1. It is not a threat. I was using digital in 1978 on the Voyage Spacecrafts.
  2. It is not a better tool.
  3. Please stop trolling, you are out of step with the APUG agreement.

The last thing Fred is, is a Troll. He is real and is also a photo engineer. I can attest to his analog credits.

I should add that he too is my friend.

I've always believed in matching the tool to the job and feel that digital technology should be just another tool in a photographers toolkit.

I have no gripe with your thought in general or in the real world, digital tools can do great stuff, but discussion of digital is outside of APUG's mission, goal, and purpose.

It is also not what the OP asked about.

Basically what I'm wondering is for commercial use where color accuracy is key what is the most accurate film available today? Or is this solely the realm of digital now?

Sorry, Sparky, but I'd put my money on PE's recommendations if I were a betting man.

Hey Mark... I'm not "always" a troll. My intent was simply to point out the OP did ask about digital. I'm sorry if my post "..." is perceived as short.
