Has anyone calculated how much his camera equipment would cost now?

today it must cost a small fortune, i mean, this ansel adams guy, he was really-good, wasn't he ?

If we were to talk about someone buying his gear, personally, it might go on record as the highest price ever paid for any photographic gear.

Hi

The more famous quote is 'Adams and Weston have gone mad they are taking photographs of rocks' ~ but it was probably in French...

I thought it was Bresson during wartime ? Something like "Europe is burning and what is Adams doing? Taking pictures of rocks"

But I've never managed to find the quote as I remember it so i expect my remembrance is at fault

The world is going to pieces and people like Adams and [Edward] Weston are photographing rocks!

Somebody had to take good pictures while HCB was doing his thing.
"his thing" after being captured as a french army corporal was being a P.O.W. and doing forced labour for the nazis.

But that does not mean we have to be solemn about him, Ben.

Awful things happen all the time, and have always happened all the time, and it is not disrespectful to retain one's sense of humour simply because of that.

hard labor and torture are usually not the best things to goof around about ...
it is sad that humanity for generations upon generations has reverted to that method
of subjugation in and out of times of war ..

but just the same i would have expected more than just rocks and trees from one or two
of the most prominent of image makers ... then again look what is going on in other parts of the world today,
as we goof off in this thread, and the most prominent image makers of today
( who aren't traditional war-time correspondents, new traditionalist "new media/internet" correspondents )
are making equally as "frivolous" images ... maybe frivolous-images are an escape from the day to day of the human condition...

All I can say is, just because horrible things are happening in the world doesn't mean all photographers on the planet should become photojournalists. If we all had to convert as such every time something terrible happens then there would never again be nice portraits, landscapes, wildlife, nudes, product photos, floral photos or porno. And, as jnanian alludes to, without art and refocusing people's attention on the beautiful things in this world, this would be one very depressing place to live. Give me pretty rocks any day over blood and guts. I'm not stating we should hide from the realities of war and suffering. I'm stating that we can't focus solely on those things because without beauty we can't recognize the ugliness... and why even bother trying anymore of that's all we have left? There are those who choose to be photojournalists. I never did.

Perhaps the point is, whatever any of us make a joke about, one can find an example of something awful connected with the subject or object of the joke. People have no doubt died after slipping on a banana skin.
If one is ignorant of HCB's wartime experiences it doesn't belittle either HCB or his experiences to have made a small (tiny, in fact) and inconsequential joke about HCB.

let's not disappear up our own arses about this sort of thing, eh?

Maybe people just get tired of the constant mocking of everything...

no one is mocking anyone.
( but i know i am laughing at myself.
i have cameras from every format from 110 - 11x14 and bigger )
it is a silver bullet thread.
everyone who uses a camera
chases a silver bullet whether it is film
or chemistry or paper or a camera system.
if we can't laugh at ourselves we live a pathetic existence ...

William Mortensen had something to say about that! From "The Model"... in context of the attitude of the artist towards the model which

Causes Resentment.

1. Cheap flippancy.
2. Timid vacillation.
3. Tyranny.
4. Egotism.

I have been guilty of a few of these. Not necessarily against models but here in this thread.

It doesn't matter. Some yutz fancies himself a history teacher, and felt like apologizing for the misinterpretation of a comment made in the midst of a nonsensical discussion. End of story.

no it doesn't matter one bit michael. don't take any the nonsense personally ..
after all it has nothing to do with you ...

as i said there is no one in particular this thread is mocking ..
everyone and his/her cousin chases a magic bullet at
onetime or another ... that is what this thread is about
sure 35+ years ago i saw this first,
and many times since ... self abuse, because i am not so full of myself
that i am unable to laugh at an utter waste of effort and money?
