Here are a few prints from the home made emulsion.
I usualy have some small blotches or spots on the negative,probably dust flying around in the dark room whith the dehumidifyer going.

Some blemishes are round blury spots one of wich can be seen to the right of the smoke stack on the steam engine picture.

ISO is about 3.
I tried to find a suitable picture in a book or other photos to use for the guy by the engine with no luck, so I used one of my studio test exposures from a couple of years ago. Just print to size,cut out,glue on a stick and place in hole next to subject.

What can cause the defects and what would be the cure other than an imperfectly clean plate?

He means "cures" them.

Filter the melted emulsion right before coating the paper or plates. It removes any bits of crud, solidified gelatin, or silver halide particulate that will make little blotches on the finished product.

Just make sure it doesn't contain any brass, bronze or copper. Then it won't cure them, it may cause them. Iron may also cause spots.

I used muslin cloth for filter material, maybe that is letting out small fibres and may not be compleatly clean since I reuse the cloth each time,I clean it out with hot water after use.

Well, I've used muslin and it seemed ok. I've also washed it with no apparent problem. But, I've found that the muslin pore is larger than many foreign objects, so the coffee filter appears to have performed better for me.
