Do you think a monthly shooting assignment would be good for APUG? I know that a few other sites have this type of thing and I personally, enjoy viewing what people have done as well as participating in it.

I know that the Egg Slicer seems to have piqued the interested of several folks, I thought it might be a good thing for APUG to have as well.

And if this goes forward, I think the "subject" should be of interest to all interested parties. So one month would be a still life and the following month would be a landscape and then a portrait another month.

So, whatcha think?

It isn't a bad idea, I've seen it work quite well in a number of places. Unfortunately, I rarely participate in them - the turnaround time is usually too short for me.

I think if it were monthly, as you've suggested, it's a great idea. I'm sure I'd make time in a thirty day period to be able to participate.

Unless I am mistaken, didn't Petersens' Photographic or another publication have something like that in the past? But like Robert, I would probably need more that a month to take part in something like that.

We did this for a while here on APUG and Sean did have a place in the gallery for it. Not sure what happened to it but it was fun.

I think FrankB ran it for quite a while, but it was dropped because of evential lack of interest. That doesn't mean that someone else can't organise it again.

Yes, this would be fun and 90 days would be about right for me.

60 days to ignore it, 20 days to be vaguely disturbed by the "something I needed to do". 5 days of terror in remembering and 2 sweaty all-nighters to pull it off.

About right.

I would be willing to give it a try though I don't know if I would regularly commit myself to it.

I might manage an annual, but I find monthly too "hurried" for LF on the sites where I've tried participated in these.

Come on you guys. On the first of the month, the subject would change. You can do this and if you can't just add to what you can.

But I would love to see this and would certainly be a part of the "moderation" if needed.

The APUG challenge gallery is still there. Maybe you can revive interest. It might also make for an interesting print exchange as well. I'd certainly be more serious if I had comitted to sending out a print, and not just submitting a scan. But every 90 days would be about as fast as I could shoot/print/send an "assignment".

As Ole said, David, volunteering??

I am volunteering. We can start with August. I would think the "challenge" would run monthly but with postings can happen any time.

Good idea- that way folks can post responses when life allows, even if it is outside of the 30-day limit.

You could post a year's worth of monthly subjects. This would give people anywhere from 30 days to 364 days of time. It may take away from the spontaneity of it though.

This sounds like fun. I use film which I develop myself, then I scan and print on an inkjet printer - so I am not allowed to participate with these images. But would scanned Polaroids be allowed?

Sounds like a good idea to me. I occasionally participate in a similar monthly contest; it is my experience that a month is rather short, especially for us analog people (the one I participate in is mainly populated by "the others", and just a few analog shooters). Two weeks to think of a good scene in the back of your mind, third weekend to shoot & develop, skip printing, scan from negative.

Take 1 1/2 month, and there's more time to shoot again and to do proper printing (I find scanning a print a lot easier than scanning from the negative).

Long story short: yes, I'd be interested in such a contest.

I have created a subforum for this project. David B will be the owner and moderator of this project and subforum. I have also changed the old challenge gallery to be the new Monthly Shooting Assignment gallery. If you guys need anything else let me know, sounds fun

Would it be a contest, or just sharing photographs?

I'd be more interested if it's not a contest as such, but probably not every time - but when I could get to do it and felt inspired by the subject I would...(btw, how would it be decided what the following subject is to be?)
