There have been wonderful MSA topics lately, I hope this will not be too mundane!

The theme for May and June is Near and Far.

Please do not feel constrained to a literal interpretation. Use creativity and imagination!

The theme also "just happens" to be well suited to pinhole photography
You won't get an unfair advantage from pinhole but you might enjoy it!

If you have been thinking of trying MSA, please do! All are welcome and it is a lot of fun.

Here is a link to the (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

That's a cool topic, Ned. I look forward to attempting a photograph with this in mind. Got an idea for it.

... creativity ... imagination ... pinhole photography ...

Hi NedL,
Three of my favorite words (okay, four, but you know what I mean).
A wonderful theme. This will trigger a lot of fine interpretations.
I'll have fun thinking about what and how to shoot. And even more fun shooting it.
Thanks,
Bert from Holland.

Oh my! I'm nervous... Haha

I haven't re-loaded my 11x14 pinhole box and still haven't been able to find a cheap 11x14 holder (which I've realized I need as the darn one I made keeps having the film fall out in transit... Lol) but I will have to think of something...

Will you be posting some examples of what you're looking for with this topic? I'm not quite sure how to approach it...

When I saw the theme, I immediately thought of this:

220px-Crasher_squirrel.jpg

Note: this is not my photo

This is all I use to keep my 11x14 MGiv in my pinhole suitcase, never done me wrong yet (and practically invisible on the image too).

Hi Barbara Ann,

Matt's photo was a good one.
However you want interpret it! I hope thinking about what to do will be part of the fun.

It could be literal ( people near and far, clouds near and far, hills near and far )
or emphasize something small in the wider world ( a blade of grass in a field receding into the distance )
or something far brought near ( the reflection of a far mountain in a nearby puddle )
or a tiny pattern repeated in a large scale ( Repeated patterns near and far )
or not literal: a couple sitting next to each other but made far apart by staring into their cell phones...
or two things that seem similar but are really far apart, or seem far apart but are really nearly the same...
or almost anything in front of a night sky...
or ... or ...!

Near and far could refer to anything that can be measured in relative terms.

For example, time, pitch, politics ....

So many ideas!!!! 2 stick out! One will be hard because it would involve a priest a rabbi and a minister walking into a bar... Heh! And don't go stealing my idea!!

Beautiful first entry, fitting this theme very well! I like the cyanotype best (composition, print).

Here is my first attempt at Near and Far, both in time and distance.

The spirit of my grandmother.

My grandmother passed away in March 2013. When I visited my home country in September 2010 it was the first time in six years I had seen her, and I took a portrait of her. Then I visited a couple of times more, and when she passed away it was a difficult time; I still think about her often, especially when I'm out in nature.

I took this background photograph a couple of weeks ago, and thought of combining it with the portrait of my grandmother for this assignment, as a symbol of my connection with her.
It's near in time because of one of the negatives being exposed and developed just a couple of weeks ago, and near my home. And far because of the time I took the portrait, and also because it was on a different continent. Finally there is a distance between my grandmother and I that cannot be bridged, yet she is still so close to me.

I hope it qualifies, even though one of the photographs are not new. If not, then at least I had fun making it.

Silver gelatin print, about 6x9" size.

Nice work, Bertus! I like the time aspect a lot, and your interpretation is very similar to mine.

Hi Thomas,
A very nice print and a great way to remember your grandmother.
