I don't think Chris Matthews would consider himself a journalist.

I was going to offer a snarky agreement but I'll behave my self.

Sorry to say, many young people have little general knowledge, even after having gone through college. If it wasn't taught, they don't know it. I remember talking with a geology graduate and referred to the material on a slope as alluvium. He said "How do you know what alluvium is? Did you study it?" He was amazed that I regarded it as general knowledge.
I know I might sound all knowledgeable about it, but it's really common knowledge around here. Maybe folks know their geography because there's so darn much of it around here!![]()
Several friends are teachers, and the mood of the students has heavily shifted towards, "I don't want to know how it works, I just want to know the answer."
I've been teaching for about two months and I have already run into this.
Starting to sound like a broken record!
(response) What's a 'record'?!
OTOH, even a moron should be aware that film is still used to make many movies that they see, although digital projection is rapidly eliminating traditional projection units. But if the model only knows about video recording of porn, that might be the reason for the ignorance!

Yep. For example, the Nile Delta is an alluvial plain. Other alluvial plains, such as some in the desert near to here (inland SoCal), do not have a river per se as their source, but are formed by sediment carried from multiple gullies, washes and rivulets in the wet season.
Anyone visiting Death Valley and took the time to actually read the roadside geography info signs (and not just look at the photos) should know what an alluvial fan is. Of course folks are on vacation, so who wants to learn anything...![]()

As far as recognizing film goes... In the Digital Photo class I'm teaching, I've used a couple film cameras to demonstrate certain things (like shutter speeds, or focusing). A couple of my students looked at me like I had grown an extra head when I pulled out the Nikon F3. But I don't think anybody in the class has never heard of film; some of them don't understand why anyone would still use film, but they all know what it is.
So being 18, when she was 7 was the last time a pro 35mm film camera came out (Canon 1V in 2001)...
Same here. It might be partially because my parents are a nurse and an engineer, too, but I did end up as a scientist. I'm hoping to get my little one interested in science and the "why" of everything (beyond just asking "why" about everything like he is now).I *always* wanted to know how things worked. I was so into it, actually, that I took things apart to find out. I don't understand the whole 'just give me the answer' mindset. The best thing about learning something is finding out the hows and whys.
The fact that kids don't have the wonder anymore makes me sad.![]()
Worthy of a visit or two or three. Nice break from the local redwoods...though the first time I set the 8x10 up in DV, the back of the lens fogs up. The sun beating on the bellows warms up the insides and drives out the moisture -- it becomes sort of a steam bath in there! Usually throws me for a loop as I look at the GG and the image just get more and more hazy!
I take off the back and the lens for a little bit and all is good for the rest of the trip. My legs on my wood tripod all of a sudden are easier to pull out, too!
Nikon F6 in 2004.
Did she ask what a "train" was?
All she cared about was it was cold and I only got 20 shots before she was too cold to shoot more lol
what a ditz...have you learned anything from working with such a dim-wit?
