"Alluvium" is the unsorted particulate form of information that makes it's way from the professor's mouth (as he reads one chapter ahead of the students) through the graduate's ears, coming to rest in and clogging the never-to-be-used-again cerebral convolutions.

I know I might sound all knowledgeable about it, but it's really common knowledge around here. Maybe folks know their geography because there's so darn much of it around here!

I live near NYC so the only alluvium we've seen ever was from Hurricane Sandy which dropped about 4 FEET of ocean sand onto the streets and was quickly plowed away like snow. Lol

Also the "global warning myth" isn't a myth at all, it's just planet shift and it is partly due to us and our lifestyle and habits, I saw a great picture commentary cartoon that summed it up really great...

Several friends are teachers, and the mood of the students has heavily shifted towards, "I don't want to know how it works, I just want to know the answer."

I've been teaching for about two months and I have already run into this.

As far as recognizing film goes... In the Digital Photo class I'm teaching, I've used a couple film cameras to demonstrate certain things (like shutter speeds, or focusing). A couple of my students looked at me like I had grown an extra head when I pulled out the Nikon F3. But I don't think anybody in the class has never heard of film; some of them don't understand why anyone would still use film, but they all know what it is.

Starting to sound like a broken record!

(response) What's a 'record'?!

OTOH, even a moron should be aware that film is still used to make many movies that they see, although digital projection is rapidly eliminating traditional projection units. But if the model only knows about video recording of porn, that might be the reason for the ignorance!

That may explain her startled reaction when Stone told her he was going to shoot her on "film". She may have thought that B&W was an insider phrase for some kind of fetish genre.

Anyone visiting Death Valley and took the time to actually read the roadside geography info signs (and not just look at the photos) should know what an alluvial fan is. Of course folks are on vacation, so who wants to learn anything...

Worthy of a visit or two or three. Nice break from the local redwoods...though the first time I set the 8x10 up in DV, the back of the lens fogs up. The sun beating on the bellows warms up the insides and drives out the moisture -- it becomes sort of a steam bath in there! Usually throws me for a loop as I look at the GG and the image just get more and more hazy!

I take off the back and the lens for a little bit and all is good for the rest of the trip. My legs on my wood tripod all of a sudden are easier to pull out, too!

I *always* wanted to know how things worked. I was so into it, actually, that I took things apart to find out. I don't understand the whole 'just give me the answer' mindset. The best thing about learning something is finding out the hows and whys.

The fact that kids don't have the wonder anymore makes me sad.

You've confirmed one of the classic model stereotypes . . .

Same here. It might be partially because my parents are a nurse and an engineer, too, but I did end up as a scientist. I'm hoping to get my little one interested in science and the "why" of everything (beyond just asking "why" about everything like he is now).
Imagination is also something that many people seem to lack. It was greatly encouraged in my house growing up.

I did HALF the shoot yesterday, it was too cold for her outside and we stopped, but it was cold, so I don't feel bad. An image to come soon...

Did she ask what a "train" was?

No, but she also wasn't concerned that it was an active track, nor that I had to warn her not to touch both tracks at once in case they were actively electrified... Lol. All she cared about was it was cold and I only got 20 shots before she was too cold to shoot more lol

Geez.. she's even too dumb to wear clothes outside when it's cold... and she wears high heels to walk on train tracks! But it appears she can read...

It's amazing how little general knowledge many people have, even when much older than she. Schools don't encourage broad-based knowledge, and are teaching subjects more than encouraging learning. I know young people who got into Stanford and UC Berkeley who just don't know much generally. They learned their subjects in school and gave the right answers on tests, but are incurious. They are not unintelligent, but are uninquisitive. So they just lack a lot of "common knowledge".
