In another thread some questions were raised about mixing Pyrocat. For personal reasons relating to the name of the thread I think it better to start a new thread and answer those questions here.

So here goes.

Hi,

I am attaching as a cut and paste document several versions for mixing of various versions of Pyrocat, including -M, -P, -MC and -PC.

Let me know if there are any questions.

I am deeply indebted to Gadget Gainer for his advice and recommendations for mixing the glycol based versions of Pyrocat, including Pyrocat-HD, -MC, and -PC.

Sandy King

Pyrocat-P
Stock A
Distilled Water at 120ºF 750ml
Sodium Metabisulfite 10.0g
p-Aminophenol 5.0g
Pyrocatechin 50g

Water to 1000ml

Pyrocat-M
Stock A
Distilled Water at 120º F 750 ml
Metol 2.5g
Sodium Metabisulfite 10g
Pyrocatechin 50g

Water to 1000ml

Notes:

1. Mix the chemicals in the order given and stir until dissolved before adding the next chemical.

1. The use of the potassium bromide restrainer used in Pyrocat-HD is not needed with Pyrocat-P and Pyrocat-M because of the lower pH threshold of metol and p-aminophenol than phenidone.

2. Stock B solution is the regular Pyrocat-HD solution.

Pyrocat-PC
Stock A
Propylene Glycol at 150F
Pyrocatechin 50g
p-aminophenol 5.0g
Ascorbic acid 4.0g

(Mix in the order noted and stir until dissolved)

Pyrocat-MC

Stock A
Propylene Glycol at 150F 750ml
Pyrocatechin 50 g
Metol 2.5g
Ascorbic Acid 4.0g

Mixing directions. Start with about 8ml of TEA at room temperature and a spoonful of water. Now add 2.5 g of metol and stir to make a slurry. This is eventually going to make a liter but you can start in a 1/4 liter cup. After the slurry gets a little more fluid, add 15-20 ml of some warm propylene glycol. Now you can transfer the metol slurry to the 750ml of warm propylene glycol and stir until dissolved. Now add 50 grams of pyrocatechin and stir until dissolved. Add 4.0g of ascorbic acid and stir until dissolved.

I prefer your rendering to the "slutty" version that Patrick shared originally.... Not certain if it was a typo or a Freudian slip from him? As the 'r' key is next to the 't' key, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt!

Actually, that "slutty" version resulted from my error in typing so Gadget is not to blame. At least, that is how I recall it.

No Freudian slip-up there.

Sandy, in case of the PC and MC versions wouldn't it be add "Glycol to 1000ml"?

Thanks.

jan

Hi jan,

Yes, the directions were based on making 1 liter of Stock A. So you start with 750ml of glycol, and after all of the chemicals are dissolved, add glycol to make a total of 1000ml.

Got it... Actually, I normally try not to add noise to the proceedings here, but I'm sitting with a turned ankle for the past couple of days, leading up to my daughter's wedding this weekend. You know, the old "idle hands" principle. Too much time and too few outlets!
