miroslav tichý

i have been a big fan of his work and wish i had been in europe
when they did a big retrospective of his work.
has anyone here sheen his work in person ?

i've seen reproductions &c of his images and to me at least
he is an unsung hero on par with people like bresson and atget
one can say he was creepy or whatever .. but to be honest no creepier than what other photographers
who do stealth street photography. im not talking about photojournalists or documentarians
but the majority of people who do sneeky street photography .. and i would LOVE to see his work in person.
there was a short film a while back around the time of the retrospective where he was intervieed and the
film maker, narrator and gallerists toured his home cluttered with life and it was a real treat
to see him so humble, talking about what he did and why and how, and how, like for some folks, making photographs was something
he had to do... and his camera, camera work and prints are a glaring testament that one does not
need to have any sort of high end gear to make things work .. one just needs to have the will to make photographs.

Hi John ,

I have seen his work in Paris photo show in 2015 (or was it 2016?) - small, but beautiful prints.

In one book that I have purchased those prints are shown pretty good and realistic in comparing to real prints.

A fascinating photographer. There's obviously an obsessive element to his work, at the level of subject and technique, but it's no more intrusive than any street photographer. He's all about the process, make camera, take picture, print picture, discard picture. Aesthetically his work is beautiful, but he's clearly not a mainstream artist or human being.

Tichy was merely enthralled and enticed by the beauty of the female form, and strove endlessly to capture the act and moment of that beauty, clearly caring infinitely more for the action of finding beauty than of producing some permanent product of which to then be 'exploited.' That quality is clearly dwindling in people today, as is readily evidenced by the rapid willingness to demonize perhaps one of the most pure and honest expressions of appreciation of the natural female form as can be found in the annals of art history. It is a shame and a testament to our society wide victimization and exploitation of women in media and advertising (and hence expectation of that theme in all things) that Tichy's work is seen as anything other than hidden genius and pursuit of aesthetic purity the likes of which we rarely have the fortune to stumble on.

If an attractive young man with a winning smile and a high profile blog pursued the same themes, he'd have been signed up by Vogue and ad agencies would be queuing to engage his services. The fact Tichy looked like a "dirty old man" has inflamed the commentariat who can see no further than their own prejudices.

I'd definitely see a Tichy show if it came to the US east coast. Pictures of Fair to Middling Women is a great book.
