So I’m in a really awkward position where I have the opportunity to get my hands on this scanner for $250 in good condition (supposedly), but its very possible the film holder and usb cable are missing.
Coming very close to just closing the deal and figuring out the film holder after. Does anyone have any idea where I can get some functioning trays/holders? Ideally I’d like to have negative holder AND slide tray. Not sure if anyone has one they can spare a lowly hobbyist, or if there’s somebody that can 3d print something. Idk. Lol I’m just desperate to make this work.
The usb cable should be easy enough to figure out.
I would LOVE and appreciate any help or ideas, thank you all!

Part number for negative holder is FH-M10, for mounted slides is SH-M10.

It was very hard to find holders for this scanner in the past, but lately a lot of those scanners have been butchered for the exceptional lens inside so a number of holders and other spare parts were floating on eBay. I can see four available in UK at the moment. Not cheap, of course.

Of course they’re impossible to find. I find the first Minolta 5400 I’ve ever seen for a deal and its missing the holders lol My luck.

Does anyone know if I can use another tray or holder that I can readily find online ln the Minolta 5400?
Posted yesterday but focused on finding a proper tray for a scanner I’m very close to buying.
Now I want to know if anyone has knowledge on being able to cross use trays from other scanners? Maybe a universal one I can find online? Just beed a solution that will let me scan Thank you all!

I'd be very very (did a say very) careful about buying a scanner that comes with no holders. It's probably not without a good reason that somebody sold the holders and is now sitting on a (supposedly) "working but can't be tested" scanner.

I mean, I've bought a bunch of really cheap (nothing even remotely as high as $250) scanners without holders. None of them worked without problems, but were fixable or I only cared about some parts in them.

Never tried, but I know that the mechanism is very delicate.
Even the trays for the 5400 ii don’t work.
But if you find one that works, let us know.

I would not buy without trays.
the orignal trays pop up on ebay now and then for around €70
i just bought a like new 5400 for €250, complete with trays etc in original box.
bought it as a backup for my original 5400 On a local auction site.

Yes, 5400 can sometimes be found for a very good price.

$250 without holders is not a good price. Especially since days when you could sell Minolta 5400 lens for $300 are definitely over.

And get a plustek with hardware based dust removal lol

Older Minoltas share same film holder design between different models, but 5400 use new redesigned film holder. 5400II also use another film holder not compatible with 5400 and older minoltas.

{Merged two threads on 5400 film holders}

Welcome to Photrio @groddoneright! I hope you'll find a 5400 in working and complete order one day. They're very nice scanners indeed.

I'll copy in @Archiloque in this thread; he may be able to share some hints. He's quite familiar with these scanners and I think also for the current market.

Oh, didn't see this thread, sorry to be late to the party.

I actually found an old shop close to where I live that still has some NOS minolta holders to sell. They pop up now and then and I'd still recommend getting a Minolta over a plustek, especially for negatives. The resolution is still unmatched.

However, 250 bucks is on the high side indeed without holders, especially as it means it's untested. I wouldn't spend more than 100 euros/dollars on an untested unit.
