What does that mean? It's got a standard hot shoe and isn't ttl.

It is definitely not TTL...I've used little units like this for "flash painting" or for lighting up scenes during night photography...but I don't have a Minolta to attach it to...

Would this work in auto mode with my CLE?

Yes! Not TTL (your Minolta CLE doesn't support TTL any way). The flash has 1 auto range. Simply attach the flash to the camera. Set the flash on auto and turn the flash on. Set the aperture on the lens to match that on the flash. f/5.6 for ISO 100, f/8 for ISO 200 and as the picture shows f/11 for ISO 400. The camera will automatically switch the X sync speed.
