Without knowing the SLR, I assume that it controls the shutter speed continuously in automatic modes, even though it displays the shutter speeds in full, half, or third stops in the viewfinder.

It is step less in A and P mode, in Shutter speed preferred and manual standard speeds 1/8000 of a second to 30 seconds. Here is a link to the manual
