After some looking I finally found an EP-1 External Battery Pack for my Minolta 5400HS flash units. It seems that there was a later 5400HS D flash for use with later Maxxum film cameras. The D is for distance. The camera would transmit subject distance information to the flash so the correct amount of light would be put out, regardless of the brightness of the subject. Nikon and others used a similar system. The manual for the 5400HS D shows an external battery pack called the EP-2. It's smaller than the EP-1 because it takes AA size batteries. The EP-1 takes either C or D size cells. From the photos I have seen, the plugs look the same. Can the EP-2 also be used with the regular 5400HS?

Correction/Addition? After some additional research I see that the flash with the D at the end of its name is the 5600HS, not the 5400HS. The 5600HSD has a decal on one side showing that it will work with either the EP-1 or the EP-2. This leads me to believe that the EP-2 will also work with my 5400HS units on my Maxxum film cameras.
