Minolta 16 MG's !

Hi All,

I found my silver Minolta 16MG when I was searching for something else in one of my studio boxes. I used this camera on my honeymoon twenty years ago, and it has sentimental value. My late Uncle purchased it a PX in Vietnam, and it was gifted to me in his estate. I've decided to get this camera going again, and am interested in Minolta 16mm photography in general. Anyway, I bought a second GOLD 16 MG, so I can try a variety of films. From Joe McGloin (SubClub) on Ebay, I bought a 35mm film slitter, which gives me three rolls of Minolta film from a 36 exposure roll. So far, I have loaded real Tri-X, and some Efke 25.

This is going to be fun. Everything seems to work OK so far!

I planning on using these JOBO 16mm reels. I have seven of these and they will all fit in my Multitank 5. Each reel will hold two films, so that is fourteen rolls at a time, plus some 35mm as well. Expensive but a great time-saver.

And, I bought this Mamiya Enlahead, which fits my little Beselar 67C Dichro enlarger. Very clever little device.

Yes, 16mm is fun. I don't have any MGs, I have been using the QT or the older mechanical ones. I never got a film splitter, and have always used single perf 16mm movie film. Just got 100Ft of Kodak negative film not too long ago. Don't know if they have discontinued it.

Where did you get the splitter? I need one for Minox.

Don't have a Minox so better check with Joe first, so you get the right slitter.

Just started shooting with my Minolta 16 Ps. I built a slitter that takes 120 film down to 127 size, and the leftover piece will make two 15 shot rolls for the Minolta. I also have a couple of 100' rolls of Eastman 7222 which is a bit fogged, but I'm hoping souping them in HC-110 will keep that in check.

I also just got a Minolta 16 II on ebay for $4 that I bought mostly because it had the cartridge inside, but now that I have that one, I like it better. It is loaded up now and ready to try. It has a full range of shutter and aperture and sub-mini states that the lens in the Minolta II rivals the minox, as it is a 4 element design. I wasn't super impressed with the 16Ps lens, as it is a bit unsharp. Or maybe I was just seeing camera shake.

Either way, get ready for some grain!!! you'll be shooting 110 style now... here's an example from the Ps shot on Ilford FP4 and developed in Xtol.It's a fun little camera that is great for snapshots.

So far I have shot off two rolls of real Tri-X, and two rolls of Efke KB25. I've also got some Panatomic-X that I am dying to reload into these cameras. It will be interesting to see the results with the slower films. Hopefully not too much camera shake.

I don't always make pictures, but it sure is easy to slip one of these into a pocket on the way out the door.......

What battery does that MG use? It looked like an odd size cell. Please post a shot up here when you are done, or a link to your flickr account if you have one.

The 16MG's have selenium meters, so no batteries needed. The flashgun takes an Eveready 505. The 16QT takes some type of large circular batteries, but I don't have the camera yet. But it's coming!

16QT used a 3v alkaline cell. But with a cardboard spacer you can reconstruct the battery with a 3V lithium CR2025.

Here ^^ are my first four Minolta 16 rolls, the top two are Tri-X, the bottom two are Efke 25. I had quite a few "duds" from AG1B bulbs not firing, but I have since sorted that out. I also have a light leak that I need to sort out. These four rolls were processed in straight Microdol-X. There appear to be a few "keepers". The 16QT arrived but I could not get it going, so it went into the trash. At least it came with a film cartridge. It was kind of plasticky-feeling anyway.

Do you Guys have any ideas on the light leaks? I replaced the foam light seals on the camera bottom plates. Sure looks like light leaking into the body.

I hope you are kidding. Those were not disposable cameras. They are completely serviceable.

Nope I bought a DL1/3N and did not have any luck getting this one going. Dead as a doornail.
I have decided to concentrate on using the two 16MGs.
