Odd that this showed up in my New Posts page, as I've enabled only Analog.
Anyway, I would advise against a Surface Pro. I work at a university and we have some in our "laptop loan" program, but they are not very sturdy. Then again, you would probably be nicer to one than an endless stream of random students.
They are small and light, and the "in thing," but we've had many problems unrelated to wear and tear. For example, quite a few eventually refused to charge, and our Microsoft rep insisted we needed to change a driver as a fix... which you can't do when the battery is dead and it won't charge. (Oddly, they would charge using a non-microsoft power supply, but this is unacceptable. We tried the driver change, and that didn't fix it despite the reps insistence.)
Things that normally wouldn't break often do on this machine, and you can flex it too easily (I joke that it will break if you stare at it too hard). A dearth of interface ports is a pain as well.
If you're set on one of the two you mentioned, I imagine the Surface Book would bet better than the Pro, but I've no personal experience with one.
We've found the HP Elite X2 to be much better than the Surface Pro. It's a little heavier and thicker, but much more robust, showing little wear in the same situations. If it has the specs you want, it is a really nice unit.
My personal bias is for a desktop/tower as a main machine. My laptop is secondary, used mostly when I travel - desktops are easier to repair and expand, making them serviceable for a longer period of time.
