I have a Metz Mecablitz 76 MZ-5 that I would like to try to use with my analogue Canon EOS 5 (A2e) and my Canon EOS 5Dmk3.

Can I use the SCA 312 for the EOS 5/A2e

Metz recommend the SCA 3102 M6 adapter for the EOS 5Dmk3, however some say M4 or newer is fine, one person even says M3 works.

The SCA 3102 M6 is hard to find (discontinued), so if the previous versions work my chances of finding something are better.

Anyone have any experience or knowledge on this?

Will the earlier versions (M3-M5) work but not enable all functions? If so, which functions?

You need adapter 311 or 312AF and the 3000>300 adapter. (Both adapters yield same functions).

For added flash-range display, or for omitting the 3000>300 adapter, you need adapter 3101.

For the EOS 5D you need the adapter 3102 in an earlier or later version. Version M3 already was good for one 2009 EOS model.

Then you need adapter 3102 M6 or with later software version.

But will earlier versions M3-M5 work with the EOS 5Dmk3 albeit with fewer functions?

I am old school, my most modern camera is the T90. I find the SCA system quite complicated at least when it comes to TTL functions. I am lost on such question as yours, as the Metz publications do not make one wiser. I thus advise to inquire at Metz themselves, in case they still know...

(Actually I am already puzzled at series 300 level, when there two adapters are advised, which yield same features.)

The M3 works with 20D/30D/40D, too...the 3102 base mates with the Metz 3000C to be used with the Canon dSLR.
Frankly I had not had a reason to try it with my 7DII yet.

Note that the use of the 3102+3000C does NOT make the Metz flash eTTL compatible...it cannot fire the low-power preflash on command and then accept the body's command to output a specific amount of light resulting from eTTL flash measurement of the preflash.

You CAN put the Metz flash into Auto (self-photosensor) mode and fire the flash and the flash photosensor measures the light and cuts off output. Frankly, I find it more reliable than eTTL flash!

To my understanding the cable 3000C is for another series flashes. The 76 MZ-5 flash got its own SCA-cable. They differ in connector at flash-side.

Oh, duh! The Metz 3000C+3102 is for the Metz 45 and Metz 60 flash units. I have Metz 54MZ and 64AF which mount directly, as they are Canon-dedicated. The Metz 76MZ is compatible with Canon E-TTL / E-TTL II with SCA 3102 module....the 3000D adapter is not necessary
