Wire connection 98 from generator board to reflector board burned beyond use, diode D305 split in half lengthwise. Its oblivious too much current was run through this part of the circuit.
Should I suspect the flash tube?
Where can I get a small amount of the 22 gauge stranded wire that is very flexible used in the flash?

Dead AE1. I seem to recall they used small gauge wire from the circuit board to the bottom of the camera. Some
of the older p&s cameras had a bit in them too.

John meant: "take a dead Canon AE-1 and extract such cable from there".

Without further electronics knowledge to find the true cause, the most simple way would be to exchange that diode and that cable (with any cable*) and see what happens...

* if the boards are not yet remounted, any isolated, stiff wire of sufficient gauge would do.
