Yes, the get-together happened with no impact at all from the Stawell fire. Five of us went - Graeme, chiller, Wyno, OldBikerPete and myself. A great time was had by all.
Indeed, a good snappy time was had by all. Almost cloudless sky, minimal wind and 27°C.
At the meeting point, we agreed to drive to Sundial car park, leave some cars there,
shuttle to Wonderland carpark then walk the 4.2km downhill to Sundial then drive back
to Wonderland and pick up the other cars, with the walk taking os throgh 'grand canyon',
past the Pinnacles lookout and through Devil's Gap. All except Greame and yours truly
piked out after 200 metres (I would have too, but it was my plan). We took 3hours to cover
the 2Km to the Pinnacles (mostly because scenery-starved Graeme was salivating over the
photo possibilies and weeping because the light was too harsh for Velvia). Meanwhile the
rest of the party waiting patiently at Sundial was only forestalled from calling search
and rescue by a timely CDMA mobile phone call. We decided we'd better get a move on and
eventually reached Sundial by 1PM - to learn that some others had exposed 10 5x4 sheets
('just call me prolific' wyno) while Graeme and I could only manage 3 each. After some
lunch and a workshop on 'Beyond the Zone System' metering, we drove off to pick up
Graeme's abandoned car then off to Broken Falls (a dead loss photographically) and McKenzie's
falls which had lots of water coming over it because of the previous day's soaking rain.
Many photos were taken of the spectacular falls and of the meny downstream rocks and cascades
(relatively) easily accessed from the path which runs beside McKenzie river.
I retired back to the car park, having run out of film in company with wyno who, with his wife
Genny had to leave before the rest of the party returned.
Graeme (ageing) Hird and Chiller shared some truly excellent prints with us in the car park
before we said our farewells and headed off to our various destinations.
A couple of questions arose.
Whose camera had an essential component left at home?
Who drinks beer by the keg?
Who needs to learn that vertically below on the map does not mean "all downhill"?
