Hello folks,

I will certainly try and make it in early January. However, since I turned the big 40 nearly twenty years ago I'll have to ask for a leave pass from the home and make sure I take my tablets before I go.

Looking forward to seeing you again David, I hope you're well.

Lou

It's not easy organizing a large group. Nicole, LF or ULF is not an entry requirement. Yesterday while walking I found a 4megapixel Canon something or other camera laying beside the road. Maybe I'll give away all the view cameras and find my voice and fortune with this new thing that appears more toy and gizmo than photographic gear.

I hope we can pull the get-together together.

Maybe we can have a couple of separate get-togethers, say one in or around the city (Melbourne) in early January, and then around mid-January another one in the Grampians? (Seeing there are a couple of people away after the first few days in January). How does that sound?
I can probably do two - I go back to (shudder) work on 16th January, so a long get-together late in January would be difficult.

...Hey, you get to join the old farts club, cool! I joined that club back in June this year. Luckily I still feel 14 most of the time...
Tell me, do they smell any worse than fresh ones? :D I feel too young to be 40 yet. Just a number, just a number, nothing special about it ....

What? They grow on trees over in Victoria? I knew there were serious problems with invasive species, but that's getting ridiculous! Digital is the new cane toad ....

Cheers,

Yeah, I think I'll become a pixelographer. I want to join the throngs beating a path to digital nirvana. The majority just can't be wrong. I was wasting my time with big negatives, tonality, detail, prints that last, technique, etc. It isn't the process that counts, only the end result - a digital fine print (is that an oxymoron?). Yeah, destiny appeared yesterday in the form of a digital snapper. Anyone want my 20x24 that is landing in Melbourne on Monday? I've seen the light and it's pixelated.

Digital is the new cane toad .... Good one Graeme!

Let me be the first to put my hand up for that redundant 20x24. And that decrepit piece of junk you make your 8x20 shots with.

BTW, you must keep the "road-kill" so you can share the big prints with us here in the world of the internet. Just pixelgraph your prints and post for us to see (there are no affordable scanners that big anyway).

I hope we'll get a sighting of the new toy in January?

no idea about the 'fine' part, but according to most adverts at the moment you can turn your 'digital pictures' into 'real photos' by printing on 'real photographic paper'

Is that at the real photography store called Harvey Norman? That sounds like an admission by the marketing gurus that digital pictures are not real photographs, unless of course, they are printed to be so. They must be picking up a trend from customer surveys which show people aren't thinking of their digital cameras as "real cameras" and they are cashing in on that perception.

Back on topic: so, is the 2nd of January a definite? I'm voting for that day. Location is unimportant at this stage for me.

I'm fine for the 2nd. What are the popular choices for venue? Cityish is probably easiest for most?
Were you planning on more sunrise photos, Graeme? Or is that too difficult now that you're nearly 40?

jumping the fence might be!

I might be half a chance for the 2nd... depending on when I get back into town.

P.S. David, what was the outcome of the carpark driveway piccy you took that day?

I'll bring a print when we meet. I've never printed it up well but will. Thanks for asking. The exhibition has gone well with 9 prints selling.

Sorry to come in late on this :- I could make this gathering I think.
City or Country , Early mornings no troubles.

I'm not going to lower myself to respond to petty jibes about my approaching elderly citizen status. I'm up for sunrise if you young 'uns can hack it.

I prefer a more rural setting - one with some good scenery and a bakery and/or pub. I'd love the Grampians so that all the SA APUGgers can get there, but closer to Melbourne might be better for all others. I found quite a lot to photograph near Warburton (sp?) when I went to meet up with David last year. Upper Yarra is under photographed.

How about Ballarat? (Sovereign Hill would be excellent with LF and ULF gear!) Hanging Rock? (day after race day ...) Dandenongs? Mornington Penninsula? Balarine Peninsula? Melbourne's Botanic Gardens?

So many photo opportunities at your back door!

Cheers,

I wish that I could join you all, but I would probably lose my job if I took one more holiday.

I'm surprised no one had mentioned up along the Murray. I know it may be a bit far, but there is a stunning park along the banks of the Murray in Echucha, which has acres and acres of gum trees, and lots of birdlife. Great for both morning (sunrise) and afternoon (sunset) shots. The old town has some fine old buildings, including the oldest brothel in Victoria, and some of the finest paddle-wheel steamboats outside the Mississippi. The best bakery in Victoria has a shop in Echucha as well; the Beechworth Bakery. Lots of good accomodations.

BTW, Sovereign Hill is fun, but expensive and if you setup LF or ULF gear you are going to have to deal with the tourists in the way.

C'mon, Graeme, you have the nickel smelter, the super pit and the two-up school all at your back door.
Not to forget that bordello, I helped pay for, well over 30 years ago!
Damn, you know - you're right! Trip's cancelled - enjoy your get together - I'm stayin' here to play in the dust and see if I can give my wife grounds for divorce!

It's only a job Robert - there are lots of them here ....

The reason I'm suggesting Sovereign Hill is because the family can have a good look around while I play with my mates and my camera. It will keep the wife happy if she gets to spend a day outside too (instead of being stuck at the parents' house with the kids and no car).

But I'm flexible: she's only a wife and there are lots of them here ....

(geez, am I in trouble if Michelle ever reads this thread!)

I think you will be fine; I'm sure she has learned how to put up with you. :D

You could always razz the portrait photographer at Sovereign Hill; yes, they have one. He uses one of the real old cameras, the ones where you counted 1001, 1002, etc. to determine how long to keep the shutter open. Just show him your ULF stuff and watch everyone fall over.

I'm with the estimable (aging) Mr. Hird in choice of venue, except for Sovereign Hill (Ugh! Tourists!) and can make the 2nd also.

Sovereign Hill works very well for me. I can leave the family with my parents.

How about everybody else? Is Sovereign Hill likely to work for you?

 About as well as a root canal.

I'm still hoping for the Grampians -- but that's just me.
