Errr. Hall's Gap as discussed - There are only about 5 shops, you can't miss it.

If you find there is a large body of water on your left and a sign that says Lake Bellfield -- turn around as you have missed the town.

As they say blink and you miss it.

That makes two of us who agree on 8 am. Graeme, are you planning to be shooting the sunrise earlier than that?
I would love to be able to say for certain I'll be taking photos at sunrise, but right now I can't. It just depends on how early I get up that morning. I will definitely be at the supermarket by 8.00am though.

My mobile number is 0427 18 66 50. Anybody wanting a lift from Melbourne very early on the 2nd can give me a call or text message. I aim to take my swag and camp out on the night of the 2nd, so getting back to Melb if you don't camp might need other arrangements.

I'm not going to be able to get near the internet after Boxing Day, so if the arrangements change, can someone please take the time to text me or phone?

Cheers,
Graeme

Am I the only member of this list in Adelaide??

Does anyone in Australia know of any LF workers here in Adelaide that I could amke contact with??

Maybe I own the last remaining 5x4 in Adelaide?

Steve, I'm in Adelaide, and I've recently gone predominantly MF..not LF unfortunately. I did see a Century Graphic (think that's right..was a fleeting glance) in Eden Photo a few weeks back..was very tempted...but don't know enough about them yet. Might go back for another look

Roll Call for Melbourne APUG at Halls Gap January 2nd 8 am

Can we please have a quick roll call of who is coming to Halls Gap? Then we can make sure all are accounted for before we venture into the Grampians.

I'll start by saying I'll be there, and Graeme has also replied "present". Who else?

I'm booked in at Horsham with my wife and we will be at Halls Gap at "about" 8.00 am on the second [2/01/06]

I'm wondering what the temperature will be in the Grampians and if there will be any restrictions because of the BushFire danger? Here in Adelaide yesterday and today the temp has been well above 40. It was 44 yesterday.

Just bringing this to the top as there was quite a fire at Stawell on New Years Day, seven houses burnt out. I trust all our travellers are safe and look forward to hearing from them. Also thinking of all those in the Eastern states which have been hit pretty hard by fires in the last few days. I hope you are all okay.

Yes, the get-together happened with no impact at all from the Stawell fire. Five of us went - Graeme, chiller, Wyno, OldBikerPete and myself. A great time was had by all.

Looking forward to some pics! I had the "joy" of packing the car and battling the holiday traffic back from Lakes Entrance... god they give licences to some morons!

Another Melbourne APUG Day January 16th?

There may still be a possibility of another Melbourne APUG get-together on about the 16th of January. Anybody who is interested, please reply to this thread.

My apologies for being absent. My car developed a big problem (blew a head gasket) so I was stuck in Whoop Whoop without a computer to give notice that I couldn't attend. I would like to consider Kevin's idea of a get together on the 16th of January.

Hi David. We thought you may be coming and waited around until about 8.40. Sorry about your car problems. Hopefully we can make something happen on the 16th.

according to my calendar, the 16th is a Monday, which means I'd be working, so an evening 'piss up' might be doable for me

Indeed, a good snappy time was had by all. Almost cloudless sky, minimal wind and 27°C.
At the meeting point, we agreed to drive to Sundial car park, leave some cars there,
shuttle to Wonderland carpark then walk the 4.2km downhill to Sundial then drive back
to Wonderland and pick up the other cars, with the walk taking os throgh 'grand canyon',
past the Pinnacles lookout and through Devil's Gap. All except Greame and yours truly
piked out after 200 metres (I would have too, but it was my plan). We took 3hours to cover
the 2Km to the Pinnacles (mostly because scenery-starved Graeme was salivating over the
photo possibilies and weeping because the light was too harsh for Velvia). Meanwhile the
rest of the party waiting patiently at Sundial was only forestalled from calling search
and rescue by a timely CDMA mobile phone call. We decided we'd better get a move on and
eventually reached Sundial by 1PM - to learn that some others had exposed 10 5x4 sheets
('just call me prolific' wyno) while Graeme and I could only manage 3 each. After some
lunch and a workshop on 'Beyond the Zone System' metering, we drove off to pick up
Graeme's abandoned car then off to Broken Falls (a dead loss photographically) and McKenzie's
falls which had lots of water coming over it because of the previous day's soaking rain.
Many photos were taken of the spectacular falls and of the meny downstream rocks and cascades
(relatively) easily accessed from the path which runs beside McKenzie river.
I retired back to the car park, having run out of film in company with wyno who, with his wife
Genny had to leave before the rest of the party returned.
Graeme (ageing) Hird and Chiller shared some truly excellent prints with us in the car park
before we said our farewells and headed off to our various destinations.

A couple of questions arose.

Whose camera had an essential component left at home?
Who drinks beer by the keg?
Who needs to learn that vertically below on the map does not mean "all downhill"?

I'm pleased the weather didn't interfere with your get together. I'm just over the border and we had two 40+C days on New Year with a forecast of lightening (fire risk). I was a bit worried it might have messed things up for you all. Glad you got the chance to meet up and have some fun. I hope we get to see some pics either here or on someone's website. Cheers.

Any Chance of another APUG Get together around early May 06?

Hi All,

I am taking 2 weeks off early May and plan a trip down The Great Ocean Rd from Sydney to Melbourne and back, any chance you might be having a get together around that time?

Also can anyone suggest a good place to base myself for a few days to photograph the 12/11/8 or however many are left Apostles?

This is going to be my first trip with my new/old 5x7, will also be shooting MF so I want to take a few days in the best couple of areas anyone can suggest.

Regards

Brendan

Brendan,

Seeing that I have only visited that area once, I don't know all the ins and outs of the area. However, I traveled the Great Ocean Road in 2004 and found it to be a good trip all around.

My suggestion would be to base yourself out of Portland. It is a bit out of Port Campbell National Park, but you will avoid the tourist crowds, and it will allow you to take advantage of the beautiful limestone cliffs and lighthouse outside of Portland. Port Fairy, which isn't too far is a really nice little town on the coast, beautiful harbour. If you need a bigger town, you could go over to Warrnambool; the town has a fair bit of galleries, but I can't tell you anything about the beach there.

Other places to see along the trip is Johanna Beach, near Otway National Park (Graeme knows some great spots here, but he is on holiday for the month of January). The road between Apollo Bay and Lorne is also quite spectacular. Here is an image I took when I was there: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Hope you enjoy the trip, and I hope you post some of your results on your return.

OldBikerPete posed some questions -

Whose camera had an essential component left at home?

That would probably be me. As if being the only MFer among the group of five wasn't intimidating enough, I of course neglected to bring my 40mm lens for my Hasselblad 500 C/M. And of course, there were many photographic opportunities spotted where "Hey, wouldn't this be ideal for your 40mm lens?" So, I went to the other extreme and took a lot of shots with the 150mm and 2X converter.

Who drinks beer by the keg?

That would be chiller. I picked him as being an avid home brewer when I spotted the telltale reusable Coopers plastic home brewing bottle in his car.

Who needs to learn that vertically below on the map does not mean "all downhill"?

That would be OldBikerPete. Yep, after a couple of hundred metres of uphill climbing, the rest of us apart from Graeme decided that OldBikerPete's interpretation of downhill was clearly different from our own.

I've deveoped one roll of shots from the day and have two more to come. Hopefully I'll get some into the Gallery this week. Still looking forward to shots from the others, especially from Pete and Graeme's vertical walk.

It depends on how small a town you want to stay in. The closest accommodation used to be called Apostles View Motel, but is now called Twelve Apostles Motel. As you drive into the 12 Apostles car park, stay left and drive about 2 km up the road. It's cheap and very friendly and a great option if you want to be up for dawn shots. If you prefer to stay in a town, Port Campbell is about 12 km west of the Apostles. It has several motels and B&B's. On the eastern side there are several B&B's around Princetown. I think the closest one is Clifton Lodge, 2 km east of the Apostles. If you want to stay in a city, Warrnambool is a fairly large city about an hour's drive west of the Apostles. On the eastern side, about an hour and a half's drive along windy roads is Apollo Bay. I stayed two nights in Apollo Bay between Chrissie and the New Year and drove both mornings to the Apostles for dawn shots.

If you need any more info, PM me.
