..The pancake I read that it is not good and the 43 mm really costs too much..

I love the 40mm 2.8 pancake. I am really glad I didn't pay attention to what I read... the internet is a strange thing. Someone with perhaps little to no experience with a product will make a statement, and this gets repeated by others as fact..
Worse case scenario is if you don't like this (or any) lens, you can sell it on. As all these lenses are used now, chances are you will not lose much if any money in the experience.

Unless you have a bad copy, there are no optical quality issues with the Pentax 40mm f2.8 just that it cost more then the 50's and that it is smaller and takes a little getting used to it.

I have the 50 1.7 and it's good. Not a summicron but good 50....

Jeeez, the 50mm f/1.7 SMC Pentax-M is a damned good lens.... Have you even tried it?
I cannot imagine wanting something better than the 50mm f/1.7 SMC Pentax-M
Use it, make some photos and you will see.

If someone sends me a PK-LeicaM or PK-NikonZ adapter, I will take side by side pics w/ a Summicron 50 and a Pentax 50 lens. And see if anyone can tells what's what..

Certainly the 50 / 1.7 is excellent. I don't express myself on leica lenses because I have never been lucky enough to be able to try them on. But I can say that I have an even better cheap lens. The helios 103 of my Kiev! Anyway I simply liked take photos with the rollei 35 with the 40mm tessar and wanted to try this focal length on a slr. And since I saw the results of a contax139q + cy tessar with great character, I was intrigued. In the forums there was very bad talk about the pentax 40 full of aberrations and fragile in the light and a friend of mine gave me his minolta rokkor 40. And to understand what to do before spending money, I asked those who have more experience. This is the reason that led me to open this thread. That's all. Thank you all for clarifying this. I will wait for a good chance either for a pentax 40 or for a lens+camera.

The Helios 103 is excellent. I wish I could use it on some of my other cameras, but it sits on my Kiev.
