Ok...here's the latest....

I got the 9xi from Chan Tran in the mail today. Wow! What an amazing camera. It looks and feels great. It has a very robust high quality feel to it with ergonomics that are spot on. And to top it off Chan Tran included two cards - the Customized Function card that I wanted badly and the Portrait card.

Can you believe this guy!? Amazingly generous. I'm so grateful.

That would be the BP-9XI? There isn't one listed on eBay. Hard to find? Expensive? 2CR5 batteries are around $9 on Amazon. Do the batteries drain that rapidly?
The picture you posted appears to have the battery grip already attached .
Apart from the extra height , I can see the turn grip to screw it to the body .
The battery tray should slide out from the end opposite the cameras grip , or else it has a cover that clips to the top like some later grips , meaning you have to take the battery pack off to replace the batteries .
Good news about the CF card , enjoy your new camera . 😀

That plate on the bottom was just to attach a wrist strap. Sure does look like a winder, though. Chan Tran corrected me on that. I took the plate off. The 9xi really isn't that heavy, but it's heavier than I want hanging off my wrist. I'll use the Peak Designs strap I have with it.

Yes, that card was a very pleasant surprise!

At the risk of going on and on about it...the ergonomics really are superb. I can't put the thing down. I do have big hands, though. I think folks with small hands may find the controls a bit of a reach.

30 rolls is not a whole lot because I do shoot a lot of blank that is without film. I know I have a 2CR5 battery somewhere but I couldn't find it.

You've been more than generous without sending a battery, too. The batteries only run about $9 which isn't bad.

The cost of AA has really gone up past few years, so 4 AA is not that much less than a 2CR5, I guess if buy online I can cut my price. The motor winder for the Minolta 9000 uses 12 AA, + 2 for the body, last time I used it I bought standard carbon zink I got at a dollar store.

And if you fit the CG-1000 to it with a flash on top and one on the hotshoe for fill in flash , you need even more batteries 6+4+4 , your now up to 28 batteries !!!
Don't forget your spare set !

I always use Sanyo Enloops in my gear ( rechargeable batteries) they work well .
I've had them 10+ years and there still going strong.
I think they've long since paid for themselves and are running free now !
Although I don't have 28 if them to run the lot....

If you want to lighten your load on your 9000AF , instead of the MD-90 motordrive fitted , get an AW-90 auto winder .
It only takes 4 AA's , less fps and no shutter release on the grip , which u don't find as a great loss .
YMMV

Does the 9xi have a focusing screen that can be removed? I'd like to see if I can clean up a lot of little particles I see through the viewfinder.

I have the winder as well, it is more than fast enough from most situations, and much less complicated to set up than the drive. I dont use the CG 1000, maybe if I was shooting weddings. I need to dig all the parts out and set up one A9000 with motor drive and flash set for display.

I got the 28-85mm lens today and put it on the camera. Man, that combo is heavy! But it does look the business.

The lens motor inside the 9XI is large and really does a good of focusing. The viewfinder readout is visible even in bright light, I find the 9 hard to read in the bright summer sun.

Minolta made some very great fixed focal length lenses, especially wide and telephoto ... like the Maxxum AF 200mm f/2.8 APO.
I have used that one, and also still have a Maxxum 50mm f/2.8 macro (1st gen), and 50mm f/1.7.
The Maxxum AF 28-135mm used to sit on my camera most of the time.

Most of Minolta's first generation Maxxum lenses were simply their Rokkor-X lenses with auto-focusing added. And many of Sony's A-mount lenses are too.

The 28-85mm may suit me just fine but I may want a bit more focal length. I just don’t want a lot of weight hanging off the front of the camera. I could see getting a 200mm though.

I don’t have a battery for it. A search for one locally turned up nothing so I’ll need to get one online.

I’d asked this before but got no response…

Does the 9xi have removable focus screen?

Here is a bit of info : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minolta_9xi

Scroll down near the bottom it says :
  • Focusing screen Changeable at an authorized Minolta service facility; type L (matte field with grid) or type S (matte field with vertical-horizontal scales)

Ok. Thanks. I wanted to get at the black specks that I see in the viewfinder. Wasn’t sure if there was a easy way to clean that up.

There are plenty of 28-100mm/135mm/200mm/210mm -- even 28-300mm -- to chose from. My all-in-one is a 24-200mm.

The longer the range, the longer and heavier the lens. Same goes for the maximum aperture -- and the price tag follows close behind.

In my thinking anyway - and I could be wrong - this camera is best mated with a zoom lens which is why I went that direction. Putting a 50mm prime on it somehow feels like underkill. So...I guess the weight of the zooms comes with the territory.

I sure like the concept of that 24-200mm. I'm not sure I'd ever need another lens with that one.

The Minolta 28 to 100 3.5 to 4/5 D 8 pin is lighter than the mostly metal 5 pin 28 to 80 or 85, the later lens are the most plastic.

I have a 28mm to 200 Tamron, it is an early superzoom soft at both ends, as I keep more towards the middle range does fins. The 24 to 200 will be great for travela nd walk around, I would higher speed film as superzooms are somewhat slow.

I did a quick Google, and it appears that their is an LCD overlay on top of the focus screen ... which may be why the manual says it has to be done at a service facility. The Maxxum 200 is a great small lens, I got one for sale if you ever find a battery !!!
