Is there one mat size for an 8x10 print that can be used for horizontal, or landscape, and vertical or portrait? One size that "looks good" when used for both. I have one that I use but want to see what others have found or not.

I mount and mat 8"x10s, 6.5"x 10s and 10"x10s in square 14"x14" frames. I make my prints to various aspect ratios but I like the look of the uniformity of the frames on the wall. Just personal taste.

"CAN" be used..? Sure. Anything larger than 10" X 10", plus a little for "breathing space."

A different question entirely .... involving aesthetics and the most mysterious, unexplainable, and unanswerable question of all: "What `works', what doesn't`work'. and WHY".

I am fairly certain that a great number of characteristics affect the perception of the work - frame size and matting are two of many.

If there is a set, concrete, universal "rule" that accurately describes and predicts the effect of even a few of these characteristics, I have not found it yet. The more I try to find the "rule", the more convinced I am that it doesn't exist.

This is what I do but different sizes. Keep frames the same, cut matt openning to different size pictures.

That looks pretty cool but I don't have a PC at the moment (just a Mac and Linux box). Funny, this is how I do it but "analog" using pencil, paper, metric ruler and a calculator. And mat cutter of course.
But I never thought of putting onto a spreadsheet like that (or just a simple calculated boxes). I'm going to have to put this on a spreadsheet to make things easier. I just zone out computers when working with photos.

I agree.

I actually found one mass market frame supplier who makes these (a simple and attractive wood frame, glass and 8x10 mat, all for about $25.00), but now I can't find them again:sad: .

My size is 14" x 16" for an 8x10 trimmed down to the image, a print mounted as a portrait or landscape.

yes, it is called "salon" style and many galleries use as a standard.

we use a 16x20 window with 8x10 and 6 x9 images with our students, makes a lovely presentation

16x20 for an 8x10. Works for me and my photos.

12x16 for a 4x10.

I kind of like the mounted slide-like look of the square mat and I can mount any print with a 10" long side regardless of shape or orientation.
