MAT 124 W/ Sunpak 383

Hey!
Recent 'thread' asked about MAT and more modern flash compatibility. Encouraged, I've attempted to introduce my recently acquired MAT 124 to the 383 and have found that the beveled lip on the front of the 383 mounting
foot only permits front to back seating. The 330deg. swivel does allow head to get forward (almost); but, the light sensor is pointing aft! Anybody overcome this obstacle??

On my older 'period correct' Sunpak that I use with my 124G, I removed two plastic 'ears' on the foot of the unit so it would slide onto the 124G's shoe with the correct orientation.

If I was to use a flash with my Mat 124, I think I'd consider reverting the shoe on the camera. It would need a simple piece to offset it a bit from the camera, some longer screws, but seems really feasible.

That on-camera shoe wasn't built to hold a heavy flash. I think you're better off with a bracket, especially one that places the flash directly over the lenses.

(i used a 411 like that for years )

i use a stroboframe sometimes, it works ... OK

I use a small falsh in the cold shoe of the Yashica D & 124G. I had to do some "surgery" on the plastic foot to make it slide in backwards. It has some exposed 135 film end taped to the flash tube. It will set off optical slaves ok.

Another way is to use a bracket as suggested above - But I'm cheap (so no Stroboframe). A $10 Ebay bracket with a handle mount flash & home made ($2.39 plastic bowl) diffuser can work well. check my Photobucket page for particulars. The square photos were taken with the Yashicas. You can see the dramatic difference the bracket & diffuser makes.

I have a 124g and have wondered how well that would work for me. What model stroboframe/flash do you have and would you recommend it?

the one i used with the 124 was something that came with
a lumedyne head attached to it. it was bought from a wedding shooter
jeez 20years ago ... i used to attach the camera to it, and the flash conveniently was up and
over the camera. i sold the camera ( and lost the bracket ) back in the 90s when i was broke and needed $$
i just b+h'd strobe frame and saw something that looked like it might do the same thing ..
but it has a screw mount and would need a shoe-thingy...

i use a clunky stroboframe for 35mm, D-- and half frame and lumidyne, but i think because the 124 needs to be looked down into,
the frame i use wouldn't work ...

make sure you bring the camera with you when you
look at frames ( or bacharach brackets)
.. you want to make sure you will have
enough top clearance since the 124 doesn't have a right angle
viewer ... and make sure your sunpak has a pc plug too
(and get a length of paramount pc cord ) ...
being in newburyport, hunts photo + video
might be a good place to look, they usually have
a lot of stuff like that. im not sure if their non-mothership/melrose
stores would have quite the selection though ...
