My first reaction was Why? The chart is easy to use from the iPhone browser. When I saw it was six buck I really went WHY?!

Hey trexx, that's a good point, I've never thought about using the chart on the browser. Wanna bet it's taken down soon or sold access? The only difference is the iPhone has a timer and tones which I would not need.

The online version of the Massive Dev Chart is free for everyone and will always remain so. All mobile devices which can connect to the Internet (iPhone/iPod Touch, Blackberry, any 3G cellular phone) are able to use the chart already and there is no cost involved or any annoying ads to deal with. In the future I hope we can provide a streamlined version of the chart (yes, it will be free) to make using the online version with a mobile device even easier. But as trexx points out, it is already easy to use from the iPhone browser.

The iPhone/iPod Touch application is designed for offline use and is constructed around the timer function. We created the application to offer people a high quality all-in-one tool for the darkroom. For anyone who does not want or need the iPhone app, apart from simply using your browser to view the Massive Dev Chart online, we also have a free app for Google Android and a free J2ME version which will work on most cell phones. Both of these allow offline viewing and can be downloaded here:

I wish there was a way to show everyone how great the iPhone app is and all of its features, but unfortunately the iTunes store does not provide this. A lot of work has gone into the application, and the price is comparable or less than many other apps of similar sophistication. The idea that we would remove it or drop the price is totally incorrect. No one has to buy it, but I hope that for those of you who do the $5.99 price tag is excellent value. We actively encourage feedback and will incorporate any good suggestions into future updates. Once you purchase the app, all updates are free of charge.

Many darkrooms are located in basements or other areas where there may be no internet access, so being able to retrieve the data offline is particularly useful for some people. The graphical multi-phase timer is a really nice feature which allows you to store and configure sequences for future use, but of course this is a luxury and you can always use a simple clock or stopwatch. But personally, for $5.99, I think its a luxury worth having.

I just downloaded it. It looks very nice -- and has all the data I'd expect.

A few comments:

- Is there a way to display the list of developers -- and then select the film? I see the list of films -- and then displaying the development times for various developers -- but not the other way around. Not a deal breaker, but it'd be nice to, say, look up "Rodinal" -- and then see a list of all the different films and speeds. I use the web charts for this for comparison and estimation purposes.

- The timer is nice, but I see it more of a gimmick -- or a backup -- to my normal timer. Maybe it's just me, but I love my old GraLab timer. I've never worked without that thing dimly glowing in the corner with it's nice, big numbers.

- I'm not entirely clear on how to add my own development times. I see that everything is customizable -- but if I customize a default time with my own times do I then lose the defaults? In other words, I'd like to preserve what's here -- but also have the option to add my own -- and then for the app to show me both. I use a lot of custom dilutions -- timed for my own darkroom and common water temps -- and it'd be nice to have a way to insert these into what's already there.

- Maybe this is beyond the scope of the application, but I'd love to see this data with the addition of a robust results database. In other words, I'd love to (eventually) see an all-in-solution for not only providing times and customizing times but also for inputting data about each roll. I see a "notes" section -- but is this searchable?

- It's very fast -- no crashes -- and fairly intuitive. The only thing I'm confused by in the notes section. I assume these are notes on the normal chart -- but what about my own notes? I'd like to see both -- especially since this is "off-line" and is a great way to keep my developing data in a single place.

Overall, I think this is great for version 1.0. I'd like to see a version 1.1 with many more customization options. I'm not sure I like the price, however. I'd feel more comfortable if this was $1.99. I'd certainly pay $9.99 if this included the customization options and results database I mention above. I'm surprised no has produced something like this for the iPhone. I'd much rather take my iPhone into the darkroom instead of my laptop. My notes are always shorthand bits and pieces, so the iPhone is the perfect way to track my work and save it for later review.

Hi cschweda,

In terms of adding your own development times, once you have selected a film/iso/dev combination you can edit it in the Timer by clicking on the star (Favorites) in the top right corner and editing the existing record to create a new Favorite. Alternatively, you can enter the Favorites menu and click on the + button. Each of these methods does not overwrite the existing data, but instead saves a new entry in the Favorites menu. You then need to use your Favorites menu to access this data as it will not appear in the main chart. The items in the main chart do not have titles, whereas the items you save in the Favorites menus have whatever title you want to input (if you edit an existing time, then that time is used as the default title but this does not overwrite the database).

The notes section of the chart lists the specific notes which apply to each piece of data. In some cases these are custom agitation methods or other unique attributes of the particular combination (as recommended by the manufacturer or the user who submitted the data). The notes are defined by numeric or letter codes. The Notes field is fully editable once you create a Favorite, so you can easily add your own notes as required. I am not sure if there is a character limit, but if you find that there is insufficient room then this is something the developer can look at for a future update.

We tried to incorporate both film and developer lists in the original build of the application, but it was so chaotic that we felt it would confuse people more than help them. In the online chart you can select one or both of the pulldown menus, which makes it quick and easy, but for this app there was no way to make everything fit nicely in the small screen so the process requires you to select format>film>iso>dev. This is a four-step process which we have tried to reduce to three steps by retaining your most recent setting (35mm, 120, Sheet) as the default. But I think that other people will probably make similar requests so it is something we can revisit for future updates. I will ask Martin Man, who developed the software, to follow this thread and we will do our best to keep adding to and improving the app.

Question:
Wouldn't the backlight from the phone potentially expose film, thus making the app impractical to use with tray development in a dark room?

Perhaps I am overthinking this, would one just stick the phone in a pocket and rely on audio tones in that scenario?

I use the FND app for a timer on my ipod touch and I really like it for daylight processing, but I can't use it for tray processing my 4x5 film because it requires you to touch it to start the development timer, and there's no way to do this while your films already out, plus I use a pre soak.
Does this have a presoak portion of the timer, where it could be set to say, 5mins, giving enough to start the timer, turn the screen off, unload film, place in presoak then wait for a ding so we know when to put it in the developer?
I'm still yet to find a good way to time my tray processing, other than a clock on the wall of my darkroom with a tiny tiny piece of glow in the dark sticker on the second hand, and watch it go round and round and round and rou...

Well, despite the so-far, luke warm welcome here, I am THRILLED that this has come about. I will be heading my butt right up to my desktop as soon as I'm done with this post to get this on my iPhone. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for developing this, it will save me boat loads of time and/or result in more even development as I don't miss an agitation cycle because I've taken my precious 25 seconds and run to the office to make sure it was really 7 minutes I read.
6 bucks is nothing for the priceless service Digital Truth offers online.

Jon, I'm loving the app and using it in the darkroom now. I love the audible tones but wish I could make them louder or longer.. something to make them more noticeable, especially if I'm listening to music. Then it would be *perfect*

Hi,

I've been using this for the last couple of months and have only a couple of suggestions:
- when you're agitating for the first minute then 10s of the next minute, you get unnecessary "agitation nearly over" noises at 60s as well as 70s.
- I'd like to be able to add new film/dev/EI combinations ab-initio, not just modify what's in there
