To be fair to Martin, he spent many years carrying a Plaubel Makina and his most famous work is on film. He also has the most extensive photobook collection in Britain, and is editor of three anthologies of the photobook, so he's entitled to his opinion.

I think it's fine. It's the perfect medium for his art. His photography is very modern, fast, gaudy and about consumerism. Film isn't for every photographer and it's OK.

Also, I've seen a few of this Asian guy's photography themed video uploads on youtube, and they are awful; all presentation and shallow un-inspiring drivel interspersed with needless interjection and sillyness.

Then again...maybe I just got out of the wrong side of bed this morning.

Wow you really do only have to name a famous and financially successful living photographer on Apug for the sour grapes to be dumped in the hopper and every scrap of juice squeezed out.

Martin Parr is a respected photographer but one for whom it has never been about the camera or method.

I personally like his early black and white work (especially the abandoned Morris Minors in Ireland series) but don't care for his colour work much, plus I'm not a big fan of 'street' type stuff (for want of a better description of his style).

As for the medium he chooses, well that's his choice. And as he put it, why would he shoot film? If he doesn't have a good reason to shoot film then it would be daft for him to do so. It's not as if his film photos deserve extra credit for being taken on film. even though most of us like to know when a photo is 'real' as it makes us feel warm and tingly ;-)

Gotta be some of the worst lighting I've ever seen in the Parr interview. Top of his head is blown out and his face in deep shadow. Surely a group of people who supposedly know a bit about photography could have made some effort to get things looking good. His remarks about film, I don't care one way or the other, but I could only make it part of the way through that clip due to the goofy interviewer.

Looking at this thread and I share his distaste (which is of snobbery rather than 'film').

I may prefer the look of his film-shot stuff but I've watched him work - he shoots a lot of frames! I can't see how anyone can object to his methods, is he not brilliant at what he does?

He's commercially successful, people love his work and he's a lovely chap.
