marshall ink

Hi all

I was looking for a new set of ink for retouching my FB print.By the way I look for some spotone on ebay but it ended at high price compare to marshall ink available @ a NY store. Does any one here use this ink for retouching print, are they similarto Spotone???:confused:

You can use Marshall's dyes just like you used Spottone.

In fact, Marshall's are a bit more convenient because they come prepackaged in bottles with droppers.

I put together a drop mixture on a white plastic palate, then using a damp brush, I make a set of smears on the palate, and let everything dry. Then, when I have to spot a print, I use a barely damp brush to pick up a bit from the smear that is slightly lighter than the area surrounding the white spot on the print. Used that way, the dyes last forever, and its much easier to match tones.

You may want to look at some other products. Marshall's I feel in not the best, because of it's color shifting. Some other products that you can try are Peerless Transparent Water Colors they come as dry sheets and as liquid contact Freestyle Photo for the product. The other product is is Schmincke Photo Dyes, I just got a full set of dyes (browns, grays and blacks, with one color on the red side) 11 in all. The first test that I will do is to patches on paper let them dry and then put them in the dry mount press for 5min. Some of the Marshalls have changed color after heating the Peerless did not shift at all the Schmincke is up for the next test.

To my eye the Peerless and Schmincke are closer to Spotone than Marshalls. I too am a Pt/Pd printer and these have worked well for me so far.

I will look for these products. For platinum print I use watercolor and it works great but for GSP glossy print I need a good dye. I have not problem with semi matt and matt paper which are my favorite in FB (Dur to to long time using Platinum paper).

I also hope to trip to Santa Fe one day. SO many photographer to met there.

Yeah, Rod Dresser has the same misgivings about Marshalls' color shift, too. He seems to really like the Peerless stuff.

Rod is and old friend and has been working on testing the Peerless product. It is good to know that it is working for him. The other spoting dyes are the Schmenckie (sp?) products from Germany that also are starting to look good. I think that both are very close to the old Spotone. We will know more as time goes on.
