I dont understand the mindset of a photographer who already anticipates the sale of a camera at the time of purchase. I won’t be around when my gear is sold, and it won’t matter if at that stage it is valueless. I have already got my money’s worth of pleasure from it, and anticipate more to come.
It's not just photographers. I also collect mechanical wristwatches and the same mindset exists in that hobby. I know people who favor buying Rolex watches - not because they necessarily love them so much, but because they know they can get their money out of them if they ever want/need to (it's one of the few brands whose watches retain, or often even appreciate in value).
I don't personally view any of these toys as investments I just buy what I like and assume there will be money lost if/when I sell.
