I think mine is a TD-504.
If it is like mine, there are two different 'barrel' options. They rotate around the photomultiplier tube, and may be pulled off to inspect, and if necessary blow dust off of the filters.

One is the M, for colour neg film reading, and one is A, for transparencies. Mine has only an M. I use the yellow dot for overall density readings. I don't recall if the dot goes up or down, but when the barrel is out, the filter colour versus the colur dot makes it obvious.

Under the translucent acrylic base plate there is an adjustable wire gauze light attenuation filter. Mine came set to '2', and the plate has a 2mm hole (I think), anyways, it works for me.

I fire it up, and the light comes on, and the the display shows a number. With yellow selected (for b&w), I push the measure taking little lever down, over the film rebate edge to take a film base & fog reading. I then press zero to zero the display, and then start taking readings.

If you are worried about accuracy, read a step wedge to confirm the gain is set properly. Mine was, and so I have never fussed with the gain knob on the back.

I have a full user manual somewhere. PM me if you feel you need it , and I can dig it up and scan it. I does not say heaps more than what I have related here.

I just emailed a copy to you...

I just realized that I sent you the French language version and can't now find an english variant! I never read this one as it was sent to me in error re: model number and I never had a reason to read it. Sorry!

Jeff,

I sent you an email with a PDF of the operating instruction card for my TD-504.

English version here: http://www.jollinger.com/photo/cam-coll/manuals/other/Macbeth TD-504.pdf

So, if I, or someone sends you a piece of film with a known value, you follow the instructions and adjust the "CAL" screw in the back so that it reads what it is supposed to.

Or use a 'calibrated stepwedge' if you have one somewhere that someone marked down the densities. Buying a calibrated stepwedge is a little expensive, especially when you only need a single calibrated step around 1.8.

I have never searched.

It was alleged to come with a spare bulb stored in the base, according to my memeory of reading my manual.

Mine no longer has spare one there.

I am going to see what dies first. If the photomultiplier tube goes first, then I will be glad I did waste money tracking down a spare bulb.

I was recommended the Stouffer T5100 Calibrated 5 step for calibrating a TD902 and it has been exactly what I needed. Not sure what you need exactly for the 504 but a phone call to Stouffer might be worthwhile for some insight. Here's the one I got and a link into the site...
