Been looking for this lens for my Mamiya 645 Pro. There are two flavors, the "regular C" and the "N". The Internet is telling me that "N" lenses have better coatings, but I haven't seen many instances on eBay in ~5 weeks. Meanwhile, mint-condition "C" versions are readily available.

Should I keep waiting and looking? Is there much of a difference between an older C and the newer "N" for this particular lens? (I am aware that wider lenses on this system are much better in N-variants, but not sure about the 110mm).

In some cases the N lenses aren't all that different optically, but are better because they are smaller - the 45mm lens is a perfect example.
I have the C version and have always been happy with it. As it is essentially the same size and weight as the N version, I've not felt the need to replace it.

because of age condition is now everything. Both C and N versions are optically very similar if not the same - bar the 'improved' coatings you mention. The standout feature of C though, is the metal outer barrel which has solid feel about it. Look for nice clear glass and a snappy diaphragm.

I chickened out and bought a 80mm f/2.8 N. It's a safe choice for me, not only I know I'm good with this FOV, but I also got it for cheap and it's a mint copy. Phew, my 645 system is complete! But I'm going to keep the saved search on eBay just in case.

I went a long time without an 80mm - 45mm, 55mm, 110mm and 210mm for me.
Then I got a chance to buy the 80mm f/4 macro for a very good price.
Enjoy your 80mm lens - while I've gravitated away from them, there are many who have had great results from them.
