Mamiya rb67 360mm lens, what equivalent fl in 35?

Hello Team,

Have an opportunity to trade a moonlight for rb67, 360mm lens....Questions...

A) is there a big difference between c and non c 360?

B) what would be the approx focal length in 35mm....(135? 150mm?)

C) anything else I should look out for, these are good lenses but getting long in the tooth.

D) the lens I currently have is the 127mm. Pretty sharp and versatile.

Thanks for your opinions and input on this, any photos taken with 360 greatly appreciated!!

It is sort of like a 180mm lens on a 35mm camera, except the difference in aspect ratios make the comparison slightly complex.
It is not a small lens! My direct experience with one is limited to trying one on a camera in a camera store.
For fun, here is a photo of a sort of facsimile - a 180mm plus 2x teleconverter mounted on an RB67! Guaranteed to intimidate the young children in the room.

the rough approximation is divide a 6x7 focal length in half, understanding also that 6x7 is not the same aspect ratio as 35mm so it is an approximation. 6x7 is about 1.2:1 and 35mm is 1.5:1.

In using frame vertical height, one can eliminate the problem of comparing diagonal measure of different aspect ratio frames.

360mm FL = 56mm frame height * 6.43
154mm FL = 24mm frame height * 6.43

154mm on 135 would present identical verical content in the frame as would be captured by 360mm FL on 56mm 6x7 frame

A 360mm lens on an RB67 has a 14 degree diagonal angle-of-view.
A 180mm lens on a 35mm camera has a 13.7 degree diagonal angle-of-view.

A 360mm lens on an RB67 has a 10.87 degree horizontal angle-of-view.
A 189mm lens on a 35mm camera has a 10.88 degree horizontal angle-of-view.

...yes, there is a big difference between the C and non-C 360mm. The later, multicoated, lens produces far less flare light. Accordingly, it has more accurate colour reproduction (the non-C has a slightly green cast), better colour saturation and higher overall contrast. These improved characteristics are maintained to a greater degree, when the lens is used 'against-the-light'. The non-C is much happier when the sun is behind it.
The 360mm can suffer from separation of the front group, but when this occurs it's often minor and will have no effect on image quality, though the 'value' will be diminished. Overall, it's a fairly large lens. About the biggest you can't on an RB 67 without it becoming too unwieldy. Depth of field is narrow and differential focus effects are seen even when the lens is used on very distant objects.

I:ve had the lens for thirty years, but it's in perfect shape. I doubt if the 360's ever got as much use even with other people like let's say 90mm or 127mm or 180mm. Even I hardly use it preferring my other lenses like 50mm, 90mm or 180mm.

Uncorrected chromatic aberration. It gets the "lateral color" name because you see the fringes mainly on the sides of high contrast edges.

A related question on these 360mm lenses. I know that Mamiya sells a lens holder to support the lens while it is on the camera. However, the manual doesn't say that it is required for use. Does anyone know if it's safe to use these lenses on the camera without the holder? Will it bend the focus rails if used without the holder?

No need for lens support with my RB67 but I use a heavy Gitzo tripod.

...never knew there was a support bracket for the 360mm - unlike the 500mm. The 360mm is heavy - but not as massive as the non C 250mm (no bracket for that lens either). I think the answer with the 360mm is 'just be sensible'. It can be safely used with bellows fully extended and although it's perfectly possible to pile on an extension tube or two it's just increasingly risky to do so without dedicated support for the focusing rails. Mirror-Up is a useful technique with this lens but it seems OK on the sort of tripod you might choose for th RB camera with a standard lens.
