Hi,

I got my 645 Super from KEH and have been taking photos outside. Tonight I set up the flash and tried using this leaf shutter lens. I am rather confused as to its proper operation. No manual for this lens and I can't find one on line. I set the focal plane shutter to 1/8, cock the leaf shutter to set it, and set it to the speed I want on the front of the lens. The lens operates as a normal lens in the F position. Do you have to trip the shutter using the cable release socket on the lens? I tried using the main shutter button and here's what happens: Focal plane shutter opens for 1/8 second with lens open. Leaf shutter closes after about 1 second. Flash fires (after focal plane shutter is closed.) When you re-cock the leaf shutter it opens and you can see through the viewfinder again. I hope that the cable release is the proper way to trip this lens, otherwise something is wrong with it. I am looking for one of my cable releases (they are always getting lost it seems!). Otherwise I will have to buy one tomorrow.

Thanks,

Doug

Have you burrowed down in the Mamiya site and browsed previous questions/answers?

Doug:

Here is how I use my Mamiya 70mm leaf shutter lens on my Mamiya super.

If I am NOT using the leaf shutter...

1) set the lens setting to "F";
2) set the shutter speed on the camera to the speed I want to use;
3) it is not necessary to cock the shutter in the lens, and
4) use the release on the camera body.

If I am shooting flash, the camera shutter spead is set to 1/60 or slower, and the flash is connected to the synch on the camera body.

If I am using the leaf shutter...

1) set the lens setting to the shutter speed I want to use;
2) set the shutter speed on the camera to 1/8 or slower;
3) cock the shutter in the lens; and
4) use the release on the camera body.

If I am shooting flash, the camera and lens shutter speeds stay unchanged, but the flash is connected to the synch on the lens.

Hope this helps.

Matt

You can't set the shutter speed on the body faster than that on the shutter or you get exactly the results you have.
If you need 1sec on the leaf shutter the body needs to be @ B and locked open.
