Hello, fine people!

I recently purchased a Mamiya M645 1000s from eBay. The camera was promised to be in "mint" condition, but already I've encountered a serious problem when taking long exposures outside. I say "outside" because all my indoor long exposures were fine.

On two separate occasions while shooting in temperatures between 0 and -5 C (23-32 F) I put the camera on Bulb and clicked the cable release. After about 8 or 10 seconds, I heard the sound of the shutter (or mirror?) click again even though the cable release was locked and the shutter button was still visibly depressed. I then tried to advance to the next frame but instead of stopping at the next frame, I was able to freely wind through several frames until the end of the roll. When I looked through the viewfinder I saw that the mirror was still up. I flipped the Mirror Lock Up lever back and forth, which brought the mirror back down.

On another occasion, the same thing happened, but then the shutter kept clicking over and over again on its own, making multiple exposures, as if there was a ghost in there!

O how I hope I've explained this properly! The camera functioned perfectly indoors and for my first few pictures outside, until these shutter/mirror problems occurred. This happened on 2 different days on 2 separate rolls.

May I please ask for your advice? The seller assured me that the camera was in Mint condition. If this is a cold weather issue and the camera's battery (6 volt 4LR44) is to blame, should I accept that this is simply not a cold weather camera? If you were me, would you find these malfunctions unacceptable and request a refund?

Thank you truly for your time and erudition. I am most grateful.

You could make a power pack of 4 AA batteries and keep that in your pocket with a wire to the battery compartment. Or you could tape a hand warmer to the underside of the camera...

Yes, it's the cold. It zaps battery capacity. Like Jon Shiu says, put a hand warmer packet on the bottom of your camera and keep a fresh battery in your shirt pocket, under your jacket for emergencies...

From the manual:
"There are two methods of taking time exposures with the Mamiya M645.
1. By setting the shutter speed dial to B and using a cable release with lock provision.
2. By removing the battery from the battery chamber.
(a) Remove battery.
(b)Set the shutter speed dial to any position.
(c)Release the shutter and it will lock in the open position.
(d) Depress battery check button as far as it will go to close shutter."

The battery you are using - the alkaline 4LR44 battery - is suitable for the camera, but doesn't have nearly as much capacity as the silver oxide 4SR44 (PX28) that was originally recommended as first choice. Cold weather operation is very demanding on batteries.

Thank you for this. I will try to track down some 4sr44 batteries! Also, that method of taking a timed exposure without a battery seems fascinating. I will certainly try this.

I do wonder if I could use this camera indefinitely without a battery, if I am only taking timed exposures? This would certainly solve my cold weather problem until I track down some 4sr44 batteries.

Yes, that is correct. After closing the shutter by pressing the battery check button and winding, you can immediately take the next timed exposure. No battery needed at all.

Well that will work fine, somehow it would seem unfortunate to be limiting such a capable camera to that use alone!
I'm looking forward to shooting some projectable transparencies on the new Ektachrome 120 in my Mamiya 645 equipment.

O yes, I agree! I will only go this route when the temperatures go below freezing. The camera works perfectly indoors. And certainly a silver oxide battery will help...

It's about time somebody comes up with solar panel to custom fit on top camera finders.
