You could make a power pack of 4 AA batteries and keep that in your pocket with a wire to the battery compartment. Or you could tape a hand warmer to the underside of the camera...
Thanks very much!Yes, it's the cold. It zaps battery capacity. Like Jon Shiu says, put a hand warmer packet on the bottom of your camera and keep a fresh battery in your shirt pocket, under your jacket for emergencies...
From the manual:
"There are two methods of taking time exposures with the Mamiya M645.
1. By setting the shutter speed dial to B and using a cable release with lock provision.
2. By removing the battery from the battery chamber.
(a) Remove battery.
(b)Set the shutter speed dial to any position.
(c)Release the shutter and it will lock in the open position.
(d) Depress battery check button as far as it will go to close shutter."
The battery you are using - the alkaline 4LR44 battery - is suitable for the camera, but doesn't have nearly as much capacity as the silver oxide 4SR44 (PX28) that was originally recommended as first choice. Cold weather operation is very demanding on batteries.
I do wonder if I could use this camera indefinitely without a battery, if I am only taking timed exposures? This would certainly solve my cold weather problem until I track down some 4sr44 batteries.
Yes, that is correct. After closing the shutter by pressing the battery check button and winding, you can immediately take the next timed exposure. No battery needed at all.
O yes, I agree! I will only go this route when the temperatures go below freezing. The camera works perfectly indoors. And certainly a silver oxide battery will help...Well that will work fine, somehow it would seem unfortunate to be limiting such a capable camera to that use alone!
I'm looking forward to shooting some projectable transparencies on the new Ektachrome 120 in my Mamiya 645 equipment.
It's about time somebody comes up with solar panel to custom fit on top camera finders.Yes, it's the cold. It zaps battery capacity. Like Jon Shiu says, put a hand warmer packet on the bottom of your camera and keep a fresh battery in your shirt pocket, under your jacket for emergencies...
Perhaps you should be that somebody! What an idea! It's about time somebody comes up with solar panel to custom fit on top camera finders.
