A bit late here, but I have modified the Thingiverse cassette and it works fine (added a light trap to the spool and tapered the bottom.
ESun matte black PLA+ is very opaque and prints well (I tend to use a 0.2mm nozzle on this sort of project), and there is another opaque black I've found that works well, will find it and report. ProtoPasta's Conductive PLA works great, but you need a hardened steel or ruby nozzle, it's abrasive (10% carbon black I think). It always eventually clogs a 0.2mm nozzle.
Easy to test, just print a test peice with 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6mm thicknesses, if it's not opaque to strong light at 0.6mm it will leak light.
Use jeweler's paper back flocking for light traps, might need to add a bit of epoxy to the inside ends as the stuff I have (20 years old by now) tends to peel off.
