Behind "slide film" both techniques I hinted above may hide, though here reversal processing is typical.
However the only direct positive film once available in consumer format was designated "Slide Direct".

you can contact print or enlarge your negatives onto film instead of paper ... your exposure times will be small and you will have to work in darkness

Yes, but the issue of this thread seems to be yielding a positive on the film the photo was taken with.
