Books have been purchased by individuals and prestigious institutions in over forty-five countries so my goal of documenting the film manufacturing process for posterity has been accomplished. I have no plans to print more copies. I will defend the copyright.

I wanted to give APUGers a last chance to buy books so on June 27, 2013 I posted on APUG that buyers should order “now” and that I would not ship books after September 30, 2013. This resulted in very few sales in July. I assumed that I had satisfied the demand from APUG readers.

In August the book was mentioned on a motion picture website. BOOM. Sales skyrocketed. To slow sales I raised the price to $49.95. Orders continued. Now I have far fewer books in my personal reserve than I wish.

If buyers mention APUG I will sell some for $49.95. I will definitely stop selling on September 30, 2013.

Just curious, if you've sold thousands of copies so far, why would you want to "slow sales" and then stop printing and selling it?

Why not publish via Amazon's print on demand publishing service? I've no experience with the service, but it might be an option to maintain availability of the book. I have a copy I purchased a year or so ago - it's well worth a read to understand the complexity of film manufacture.

I recently bought a copy of "Anthrotypes" from the Amazon print-on-demand service. Excellent quality, colour throughout, and a very reasonable price....I doubt that it could have been a viable publication using conventional printing for a book of obvious limited interest.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I may pursue printing alternatives next year, but not this year.


I retired in 2003 with the intent of spending time with my family, photographing, hiking, traveling, sailing, volunteering at George Eastman House, and just being retired.

The book project required far more effort than I anticipated. The book has accomplished my personal goal of making people aware of the great work done by my fellow Kodakers. The motivation for the project was emotional not a financial. My calculations reveal that I made far less than minimum wage while working on the project.

Yes, 'print-on-demand' might work for you; let the machine put in the long hours. I bought a copy late and it has been wonderful, and I also learned why my Kodak Process Thermometer (the ones in the SS shield) looks the way it does. What a company that was.

Got my copy today!

Yep, $50 is a lot for a paper back book, but this one is well worth it. It holds sentimental value to me as I got to see nearly all of what was explained in the book in person when I toured the coating facility in early June of 2009, I met Bob at Eastman House later that day when we all had lunch, PE was there too.

In addition to all of this, I just got done taking a book publishing workshop in NYC over the weekend that was indeed an eye opener. I am looking to put my Kodachrome Project book out soon and if I have to self publish, it might run me $30,000-$60,000 for 1,000 plus high end copies of it, not chump change by any stretch.

So I think if you really want a fascinating reference piece that is unlike any other, you ought to pay the $50 and call it good. Just buy cheaper toilet paper, less beer, etc for a few months and there is your book.
