I just received my Cambo Camera Stand and it has a Majestic 1600 head on it. Anyone familiar with this worm gear cranking head? Worth keeping?

It works smooth and is very well made, and in good condition however, seems like overkill unless you shoot with heavy equipment all the time.

Any advice or comments appreciated. Thanks.

Lets put it this way, if you wanna get rid of it let me know. Majestic heads are great.

I have a Majestic gear head on a Majestic tripod. It's rock solid. Heavy, but solid is what a tripod is supposed to be. It's hard to go back to a lesser tripod. My Manfrotto just seems so inadequate now.

I have one, and it's a really solid piece of equipment. I'd keep it.

If you are using it on a camera stand, why would you even consider changing it? I really love my Majestic tripod..by far the best tripod I have ever owned.

I have one too. Very heavy but solid. I read that they were originally made by the Modern Builders Company of Chicago. They also made scaffolding for use in construction.

I have one that I purchased from another subscriber. It is right at home under my 2D. Overkill for a small camera, yes, but when you go big, its a great head.

I have one on indefinant loan, and am dreding the day I will have to give it back. Even if it is way overkill for the tripod I have it on (a bogen 3011).

I am begining to like this Majestic.

I appreciate the comments from everyone who responded. It seems the Majestic products have earned the respect they deserve the old fashion way, quality.

I found a web site of a business that rebuilds these and they state “We still service Gearheads made 30 years ago, many for the first time’…”

Regarding my new prize, the gear drive was initially stiff but became smooth as a Buick Dynaflow transmission after using high grade clock oil on the shaft bearing. Keeping it on the stand makes sense and after playing with it for a while, I like it. The Bogen tripods and heads, while not perfect, have served their purpose however, in the studio, the combo of the stand and head is a big upgrade for me.

Thanks again for your input. ''
