I have the first edition of Freed's Police Work. The print quality is terrible. It's around cheap-magazine quality - maybe a bit lower - not as good as Life Magazine. But the photos are excellent. (I don't think the book was ever republished - might be wrong - but it's a very well-known book.)
The book is being republished in November by Reel Art Press.
According to the publisher:
The images have been carefully reproduced from the original negatives and using vintage prints created by Freed's master printer and widow, Brigitte Freed, as reference. The photographs have never been printed in such quality before...
That's very good news. It's a worthwhile book. I lucked out when I got my copy. I was walking past an aisle of books in a thrift store and saw a bit of it sticking out in a bunch of otherwise unrelated books (cookbooks, I think). It was just luck I decided to see what it was.
