Since I cannot afford the magnetic stirring device, I decided to try something else to see if it worked, and it does, I bought a $15. handmixer and it works great using just one beater. Last time I tried to mix sod.metabisulfite for Pyrocat P I spent 45 min stirring by hand, this was 15 min. and the rest of the chemicals mixed really fast. Pat

That's not replacement for a magnetic stirrer. The raison d'être of a magnetic stirrer is vortex control through speed and stir-bar geometry. If its just to mix up non problematic chemicals such as sodium metabisulfite then you'd be best off with a cordless drill and some suitable long stirring rods. This was exactly what Jobo sold as their $400 USD Chemix. Its what I use for D-76 and most other photochemicals powders. Its similar to what most organizations use. I reserve my magnetic stirrer to slowly bring, under controlled conditions, some chemicals into solution and to mix emulsions.

Cheap "suitable" stirring rods for drills? There are many paint stirrers sold to fit on the end of drills. Some people make them out of metal rod, even clothes hangers.

P.S.: 45 min or even 15 min. to mix sodium metabisulfite into solution sounds quite excessive. Are you perhaps using ice cold water? It should, by contrast, go pretty quickly into solution in hot water.

I got mine used on Ebay for about $29. Edmund Scientific or other chemical supply companies are sources.

I use the cordless drill with paint stirring technique.... seems to work fine, total investment since I had a drill was about $3.

I use a handheld kitchen blender cost about $11 at a big box store. I mix in small batches quarts and gallons.
