So, I'd like to be able to project 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9 transparencies in my new Beseler Slide King, which takes lantern-sized slides (3.25x4" outside dimensions). It seems that there were many projectors that used this size mount manufactured by Beseler, Buhl, Kindermann, and others, at least through the 1960s.

Does anyone know if there are slide mounts this size made today? I'd prefer glass mounts, but I'll take or make what I can. This thing gets HOT (750 watt bulb!).

I think that GEPE may still make these. I know they make some special size mounts. I'm sure that I've seen some of them around somewhere but I can't be sure right now- I can't seem to find the bookmark (damn computers...). I'm fairly sure that I saw glass mounts in some very old format sizes. If I run across the bookmark, I'll send it your way.

I checked the Gepe list first thing, and they make all kinds of mounts, but they don't seem to say what the external dimensions are. I can check next time I'm at B&H, but the 6x7 mounts seem to be the largest they make, and the outside dimensions look a little small compared to the inside dimensions (56x68mm) to be 3.25x4", but that may just be a misperception on my part.

The Gepe mounts for 6x7 are 85mm square on the outside. The ones for 22x64 panoramic 35mm are also this size. I don't know of any larger ones currently available.

Perhaps you have to resort to the old way: order thin sheet glass and black paper tape and sandwich the slide inbetween? I still have old slides that were mounted this way and it works fine as long as the paper tape stays in place. I'm not sure what kind of tape was used, but this must be researchable on the net.

Thanks for the info on the Gepe mounts. I may be able to get another carrier for the Slide King that can take them, or otherwise I'll be doing something like what Norm suggests.

The one old magic lantern slide that I have, and ones that I've seen, usually have a glass positive with a glass cover and a mask sandwiched in between. I would use the same mylar tape that is used for glass slides currently.

David,
I am assuming you may have found this of your own accord already (after all, as an academic...), but I'm posting it here anyway for those less adroit at Googling:
http://www.luikerwaal.com/newframe_uk.htm?/doehetzelf3_uk.htm

where some manuals how to make your own slides are listed - perhaps the site owner can send you a photocopy if you're really really really interested.

Yes, I've seen that page. Good stuff.

So just to experiment, I cut a lantern sized slide mount for 6x7 (Linhof 56x72mm format) from 4-ply mat board using an X-acto knife and a straightedge, and other than my cuts not being perfect, it's not a bad thing!

I mounted an unimportant transparency and projected it for a few minutes, and the gate actually stays cooler than I thought. The slide didn't even pop, though that may have to do with my mounting technique, which was to tape it on one side only, so the slide can expand in the mount.

The film isn't quite as flat as with a glass mount, obviously, but a 6x7 slide with this wonky setup still looks WAY better than a 35mm slide.

Maybe I'll just order a few batches of mounts from one of the companies like Redimat that sells custom cut mats, or I'll finally buy myself a decent mat cutter with production stops. I've used a Dexter mat cutter and a T-square for years, but for these little mounts, there's not enough mat to hold on to that way.
