I've come upon an old Luminos Sampler pack with some RCR Art surface paper made by Kentmere. The stuff is amazing! Best of all, I can use Derwent "Inktense" watercolor pencils to make excellent hand tinted photos.

Does anyone know if this paper is still made? Is there a replacement for it?

The paper base is no longer made so Kentmere could no longer coat it. I have a little in my freezer and I agree it is quite unique stuff.

I think the Kentmere art surface papers went through a few name changes as the paper base changed. Charcoal R was beautiful stuff, if you had a negative closely targeted for it, but it was otherwise hard to control.

I think your best option for a gelatin silver print with that kind of surface would be liquid emulsion and watercolor paper.

Yes, I was afraid that there would be no equivalent. I may look around at some of the papers made by FOMA and EMAKS, or even Slavich. I'll also haunt the big auction site in case any old stock of the Kentmere RCR Art turns up....the stuff is PERFECT for handcoloring. Alas RCR Art!

Here is a quote form the Luminos Ad about RCR Art

"Resin coated, yes, but with the look and feel of a fibre base paper. RCR-Art has a slightly textured surface on a medium weight white base. RCR-Art is dead matte so it is particularly suited for large prints like murals. This paper is one of the most unique of the Luminos family of papers. A perfect vehicle for "color enhanced" black & white prints much favored by the professional portrait, wedding and child photographers. This paper can be toned and handcolored with any medium the artist chooses to employ. With little or no surface preparation it can be colored with oils, pencils, pastels, airbrush, watercolor and even "magic markers". Available in contrast grades 2 and 3 with an ISO speed of 320. Can be ordered in cut sheets and in roll sizes 42" and 48 " wide X 100 foot. "

As far as the statement that it has "the look and feel of a fibre base paper" I an vouch for that. If it were not for may notes on the back of my prints I would swear they were on fiber and not RC paper. I have never done any hand coloring but this paper looks to be made for it.
