my main reason for going with ltm is because i cant afford m cameras.
would it just be better to get a leica ii or iii (i have seen a ii for a decent price in a local camera store) and then buy a meter for the shoe?

I had a Canon IVS2 with a Canon 50/1.8 lens and either a Weston Master V or Gossen meter. Some of my best slides were shot with that combination. A clip on meter may not be as good. Today I have Weston Master V and Gossen Luna-Pro sbc meters. Still getting good slides. I paid $50 for the Luna-Pro sbc.

I have bo experience with either.

Newer Canon LTM bodies (V-T, VI-T or L, P, 7) are quite good. Easier to load than a Leica. Solidly built. Moderately priced.

The Fed 5 has a meter.

However, while some Soviet cameras like the Zorkis can be very, very smooth if you get a good sample or have one CLA'd, I doubt anything will make the Fed feel anything but rough....

Dollar for dollar, the best value for money in an LTM body + meter has to be Canon and Luna-Pro sbc.

Bessa T with adapter... I love mine, wasn't terribly expensive and I can take my Summicron for a walk and not worry about an expensive M body

Canon P with clip on Canon meter, is comparable with Leica M & MR meter.
cheaper - Especially now with CV offering M lenses and their LTM going cheaper 2nd hand.
Faster reloading than M.

I use and highly recommend the VC II. When I received mine I was stunned at how tiny it was--the size has to be seen to be believed. I can and do leave this meter mounted full time on my M2, and can still easily close my standard Leica never-ready case, which to me was a huge and unexpected bonus. The LED's are much brighter than I expected so they are easy to see in bright sun, it's easy and very fast to use, accurate, and did I mention it's TINY?

I also have a Sekonic L-208 which I used to use on this M2. I always thought the Sekonic was fairly small (although it's MUCH larger than the VC II), but it did have some some drawbacks--it looked totally butt-ugly on the camera, and of course had to be removed every time I wanted to close the case. As a result, I gave up using it mounted, and just carried it as a pocket meter, which worked ok, but was also something else to carry around and mess with. The tiny little VC II looks like part of the original M camera when mounted. I love it. If I get another non-metered M some day, I'm definitely also buying a VC-xx for it at the same time. Once you've tried one of these, you'll never look back.

You don't want the Bessa R? It seems like an incredibly reasonably-priced camera to me.

I had a Bessa R which went through the jungles of Borneo, the rice fields of Bali, the cloud forest of Costa Rica and may other places both pristine and rough. It never failed me, had a great meter and didn't scratch film. The only reason I sold it was I got a good deal on an M5. Actually the Bessa did fail once, but it was my fault and was an easy fix.

The little Bessa was always my sidekick to the Linhof Tech IV that was also on these adventures. Used the Bessa for all my colour work.

I am sure you are considering the Bessa R but are just looking at alternatives so as to make an informed choice. If I were you I would not dismiss the Bessa R.

M2 w/VCII Meter

FWIW, here's the setup I'm using. The VCII is fast, small, and works great.

I had a Canon IVS2--and a Weston Master V too. Small world; those cameras were not too terribly common.

Would OP consider a late model FED with a built in meter?
