Hi,

I need a negative holder to fit my 6x6 negs. I was thinking of getting that:

Should I get a standard, glassless holder instead?

Am I going to have more problems with dust?

I really like the idead of being able to printe odd formats as I use a Minox too. Also, I often like to show the rebate of the film too, and I am sure that this is a better option than filling a standard holder.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Kris

I have an LPL 7450, and I have both the glass and glassless varieties. As I really only use this enlarger for 5x4 and 6x12, I use the glass carrier only. I found that I was getting focus shift with the others, even on the occasional 6x6cm negative.
With the built in masking you can use any size neg of course, with the borders showing as you mentioned, and yes, you will have more problems with dust! Double glass carriers require very clean working habits, if you can handle that, then this carrier is definitely the one to have.

My LPL is the 4x5, and I use the glass carrier all the time with 35mm. I'm just not satisfied with the flatness I get with the 35mm sandwich carrier. When I started doing this, I thought I'd be dealing with a lot more dust but it really hasn't been a problem. It's a great feeling knowing that your negative is absolutely flat and that it's not going to shift at all between exposures. I don't usually use the glass carrier with 6x6 negs because I get good flatness without it, though it's worked very well with 6x6 negs the few times I've tried it.
So, I'm a big advocate of the glass carrier!

I use the glass LPL carrier and it does a good job keep the negative flat. Also recommend the AN Glass replacement for the top glass. Haven't had problems with dust. To print showing borders of the 6x6 size, you have to modify the carrier a bit by shaving the stops to allow the masking blades to open wider (easy to do).

I got a non-glass minox holder for my 4x5 but I don't use it because you really do need glass. It has to be held very, very flat because of the high mag ratio. If you could only have one holder for all formats, a glass 4x5 would be what you would want.

I have 3 LPL enlargers, 2 4x5 and one 6x7. The glass holder for my 6x7 made roll films as good as my 4x5s in a glass carrier..Evan Clarke

I too use glass in my 6x7 carrier for my 6700. When it's not in use, I store in its box; if using for the week, I keep my enlarger covered with a large garbage bag to keep the dust out of it. A quick blow with a blower brush before I start my print session ensures no stray dust gets on my negs. Plus I use a small anti-static cloth every so often to wipe it over in case any dust decides to make its way onto the glass between sessions too.

Thanks all,

I ordered the glass version... I realised too, that I had some flatness issues when I print big, and it will be great to fix that.

Best,

Kris

I sold my glass holder b/c I was having Newton Rings anywhere there was dust. The AN glass is crucial, I'm assuming.
