Hello! I'm looking for some guidance here. I have just been giving a truck load of vintage photography items, everything from an old Besler to old Brownie cameras, to include dark room equipment and cases and books- a few enlargers and on and on.
I'm currently skilled with a digital, but I dont even know where to start with all of these items. Where can I do more research on each piece, with their value and demand? I'd like to keep the really valuable stuff, but even that is hard to determine. Can you suggest somewhere to start looking? Anyone interrested in buying any of this? Is ebay best, or is there another selling site that would be more valuable to me? I'd like to see collectors and people who appreciate the vintage items get them...
Anyways, any help is much appreciated.
Thank you!

You might post them in the classifieds here at APUG. That way you know they will go to good homes and you can donate part of the loot back to APUG. Sounds like everyone wins. Bill Barber

Yes, become a subscriber and post in the classifieds. You'll be sure that the items will get a good home.

For the purpose of identification, you can take some digisnaps of the items you're asking about so folks here have some idea of what you've got. You can post them in this thread using "manage attachments" I think. (I'm not certain if you have to be a subscriber to do that, but you can try it.). (Do keep in mind that posting images to the gallery does require subscribership, and digital images are not permitted there.)

As to research, check ebay for recently sold items that fit the description of each item you're trying to find out about. You can also check KEH.com for their current selling prices of those items, but keep in mind that they rate very
conservatively and looking there will only give you a very general idea.

If you're not even sure how to describe each thing precisely, give it a shot here and see if anyone can help you with even a little bit of information you can offer.

Concerning keeping and using part of that amount, the most valuable items might not neccessarily be the most useful to you...

boxcameras.com has a ton of information on ... box cameras.
so you can ID them and know a little bit about them.

good luck!

Where do you live? There may be someone on APUG in your area who can help you. We've had situations like that before where someone might be dealing with an inheritance or a large amount of found equipment, and someone knowledgeable has been able to help them sort it out.

Thank you SO much. I appreciate all information given. I live in Idaho, so I'm doubtful anyone in this area is a member....but if you know of someone that would be great. I will do some research on my own, its pleasurable work anyhow :D And when I get everything together I would be happy to subscribe and post in classifieds. And BTW... no digital? How would I post photos? Oh, and your right the most valuable may not be the items I will want to keep...but when I look at the boxes and all the cameras laid out, its hard to determine if/what I will want to keep. Thank you so much.
If anyone has additional information feel free to email me.
Thank you.

The "no digital" rule means no origination of images using digital means. Scanning of prints, digi-snaps of prints, scanning negatives are OK. Hybrid processes are not OK and heavy manipulation of scanned images is not OK. Somewhere amongst the gallery links is a "rules and regs" page. If you have specific questions about an image, you could PM a copy with details about the creation of the image to just about anybody who has posted in this thread so far and they could guide you in the interpretation of the rules.

The "no digital" rule applies to the galleries, not the classifieds (although I guess we shouldn't use the classifieds to sell digital equipment).

There is nothing wrong with using digital to document what you are going to sell. Just don't make it look too attractive .
