Looking for good still-life photographers

One of my favourite genres of art is still-life, which I'd define as a representation of inanimate (or formerly animate) objects arranged to communicate a message. Most of the well-regarded photographers I'm familiar with are known for their work in 4 areas: Portraiture, Nude, Landscape, and Commercial (including fashion and product). For still-life photogs, I'm at a loss.

Could you good folks please point me in the direction of still-life photographers whose photographs are not created specifically for advertising?

Check out the work of Cy DeCosse. I've seen his prints in a show at the no longer extant John Stevenson Gallery in NYC. His work is gorgeous and can be quite large. The gum dichromate prints are magnificent, and the platinum prints are also wonderful. Keith Taylor (who sometimes visits apug) does his printing... of did for the Stevenson show at least. If you can see this work in person, do so without fail.

In addition to the other photographers listed above, I would recommend D.W. Mellor.

He has two books on the subject: In Situ and Still—the later of which is #10 in the Lodima Press Portfolio Book Series.

I would also suggest the work of Jan Groover. She has created a large body of still-life images using 4x5, 8x10 and 12x20 cameras in black & white and in color. A video is available detailing her approach to her work and philosophy as an artist.

Imo Penn is pretty hard to beat. A long long career of such understated and refined work, which I think never really dwindled - that takes a special ethic.

For a non contemporary, I've always been astounded by some of Kertesz's still life work.

I agree, it's an area that seems neglected, but there are people who still practice it, and even if it is often from a commercial angle, I don't think that should lessen ones appreciation for it. Erwan Frotin with Art and Commerce comes to mind.

I just started a still life project too, which certainly isn't for everyone, but it's a work in progress (here).

BTW, lesd, really enjoyed Abelardo Morell's work. Thanks for pointing him out.
