Looking for Enlarger in Melbourne

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find a good quality second hand enlarger for B&W on medium format (6x6). I'm only starting out printing, but I've been using a Rolleicord which I love using, and want to learn to print now. I live in Melbourne, and I'm also not really sure what sort of enlarging lens to look out for, although I've heard 80mm is the right size for 6x6. I've had my eye on eBay, but there's nothing really there except for a LPL enlarger which may be a bit out of my price range. I'm only starting out with printing, as I usually develop and scan.

I'd love to sell you an enlarger, but the shipping is murderous. I have an Omega c-700 which would fill the bill you are looking for, even still, shipping would be over $100(ouch). An 80mm or 90m would certainly be the lens to use for enlarging 6x6cm negs. Maybe look for a Durst M600(series), they are very good, well built, machines. Vivitar also sold several decent enlargers under their brand that would work for you. I'm sure there are several brands common to your part of the world, hopefully someone there can help you out.

Vanbar in Sydney had an eye-popping lineup of enlargers of various formats ex State Library of NSW a year or so ago awaiting despatch to Vanbar Melbourne. They may be worth a call.

Another fruitful avenue might be to go to a good newsagent and in the photographic section look for a yellow-covered magazine called Photographic Trader. They have loads of stuff, including complete darkrooms for sale at times.

I've got a 4x5" B&W one I'm not using (lensless) since I got the big colour one.

Well I've just discovered something pretty bad. The enlarger I brought is missing the external power supply by the looks of things, which explains why it has a US plug and no adapter. I'm pretty stuck now and I'm not sure what I'm suppose to do. It's a Saunders/LPL D6700 Dichroic Enlarger (known as a LPL C6700 these days), and it looks like the guy who sold it to me has neglected to mention the power supply. Any ideas of what I can do?

Edit: Looks like he has lied about the spare negative holder being 6x6 as well, as it's a 35mm slide holder. Now I'm really stuck.

So that's the same as the power supply that was suppose to be included? What wattage would I need for an enlarger like this?

An enlarger is just a like a table lamp, switch the light bulb to 220-240 volt, and switch to your own plug head. No stop down needed to US voltage. Get your own timer which handles the on/off in your local voltage.
I don't have experience with the said enlarger, it might just be different. Negative carriers might be easier to get than you think. Just get the biggest mask using easel.

From memory, the external power supply was to regulate when printing in colour. (I'm sure someone will confirm or deny my recollection) I have used several LPL and Meopta enlargers (current model LPL7700) that had *no* external power supply other than the cord and plug - as tj01 said - they're rather large table lamps.

If it's a dichroic lamp - it'll probably need 12v to run - and probably more like 11.5v for the lamp to last a while, and remain colour stable (although there ARE 240V dichroics, so do check). So a 240VAC to 11.5VAC transformer may be the go. There are electronic switching versions of these, commonly used for domestic lighting dichroics, that might be too "flickery" for an enlarger - I suspect a transformer based version might be better for this application.

My LPL7700 has a halogen with an external 12 volt power supply. Should not cost much at a hardware store to replace.

Still stuck with this months on. I've included some pictures, I'm just really not sure what to do. One of the pictures has the input and lamp voltages; if I can skip the regulated power supply as previously suggested (since I'd only be printing black and white) that would be great.

Going from memory here - but there is only one screw/knob on my 7700 to open the back & top of the lamp housing. Once inside, you'll see it's a standard halogen or similar (they are easy to get from audio/visual stores, or on ebay).

My enlarger has a simple cord running from here to an external transformer -- nothing special, just 240v to 12v. As I said, you can buy these pretty much anywhere.

Depending what yours is configured for, this transformer may be all you need to turn it from 120v to 240v. Just check the lamp itself to figure out what transformer to get...

What a strange operating voltage for the lamp!!

Well, given power = voltage x current, we know 85 = 82 x current, which means current = 85/82, which is 1.037, or slightly over 1 Amp, so you really want a power supply (or step-down transformer) capable of sourcing more than that. Something like this 2.2A one http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MF1082&keywords=step+down&form=KEYWORD would be ample...

Other than that, you would need a sparky to do some extensive rewiring so you could use the Australian mains power directly, with an easily available lamp. If you were planning to use the enlarger forever, that might be a more prudent investment in the long term - i.e., when you can't find an 82v halogen lamp...

Cheaper still would be another enlarger, but that may require some patience

the rewiring is trivial - if this is the same as my 7700. A standard halogen transformer will do the trick.
