I need to have a lensboard oddity manufactured - I need a Phillips/Horseman/Sinar extension lensboard made (three inches of extension)which is then an adaptor board to fit Linhof Technika boards.... I spoke to SKGrimes about it, but $550 sounded too rich for my blood (sounded way over the top to be honest - I am still not sure how they manage to charge 60% more for a simple shutter CLA than most technicians do...). I would think that a competant woodworker should be able to manufacture such a thing without too many problems - anyone have any pointers to such a person?

We just made a lens board oddity ourselves: Graphic View to Cambo adapter (lenses are on GV boards, which in turn go into the Cambo board. Hearing the quotes you got, I am mightly glad we can conjure these things up without costs. But mind you, this takes several hours of work, say 4 or 5. And how much are the wages of a skilled woodworker? Somewhere between 50 and 100 per hour. So I don't think Grimes offer is too high in itself, taking into account it is probably a metal construction he would make instead of wood, but it is sure dear if you haven't got the money. I hope for you someone where will step in and offer his/her service to a fellow Apugger if you really can't make it yourself. Or try a Japanese site like Kochi-med where there are plenty of instructive images of DIY camera repair and learn to do it yourself from there on. Sorry that I can't be of more help.

I may be able to help. Send me an email with pictures of something similar to what you want to build. frank7748124 at yahoo dot com.

Norm, do you have an adress to Kochi-med? I only find sites with japanese characters that I don't understand.

Could you use a Sinar-Linhof adapter board and a Wista extension lensboard, which are stock items?

Kochi-Med (Dead Link Removed) is indeed in Japanese, and I don't understand one jota of it either, but it gets better if you use a translator service like this one http://www.excite.co.jp/world/english/web fill in the URL in the bar and twiddle around a bit with the radio buttons until you get the translation. Hope this helps. Norm

PS There is also the site from camerabuilders with tons of links; Dead Link Removed

No - I want use my Cooke XVa with my Phillips Explorer - it has 27 inches of bellows which is not quite enough to focus the front single element configuration. So I need an extension. Simply mounting the Cooke on a Linhof type extension board won't work because a Copal 3 shutter won't fit inside any Linhof type extension board...

David - sorry yes, you are obviously correct - the issue is that you need to instal the single element configurations with the Cooke lens on the rear - I just don't think that is going to be possible in an extension tube - the front element is fairly sizeable and I really don't think that you would be able to grasp it to unscrew from inside an extension tube.

I see what you're saying. The lens mounting disks on the Wista board unscrew from the tube, so you would be able to access the rear of the shutter without having to squeeze your fingers into the tube, but the arrangement you're describing would be handier.

Yes - it never seems simple....

Hello:

Have you considered what is involved in making the device you are talking about having made? You want whoever makes it to make only one since there probably isn't much market for such a device. Off the shelf parts (Including lenses folks) are cheap because they are made in quantity which reduces the cost to the manufacturer by spreading the set up costs over many parts. When you want something custom made, all the set up costs get passed onto the customer. Have you ever seen an inexpensive hand made one off car?

I can make the adapter you need. Please email me if the previous paragraph made sense and you still need your adapter.

Thank you

Sinar did make a 3" extension board with a Copal 3 opening. This was a standard product available from the distributor. Sinar dealers can check to see if it is still available. Cost was less than $300 from what I remember.
