Good evening,
I'd like to introduce myself to the Apug-Community.
My name's Mathias, but people usually call me Mat.
I'm 23 yeard old and currently attendind university.
I started photography when I was 11 years old.
Back then my dad gave me his old Ricoh 35mm film camera as a present. One year later I got my first digital camera and started to shoot pictures every day.
With 16 I sold the first pictures and started a small photography business, to earn some extra cash while still attending school. Until then my photos were okayish, but never met my expectations fully.
After finishing school with 18, I went to Nepal for 1 year, to work as a volunteer. In this time I discovered a passion for photography that was much deeper than ever. I started thinking about things like composition, light and angels totally different than I did before. During this time I decided, that I wouldn't want to work as a photographer, who has to make a living out of the thing he loves. So back in Germany I finished the small business I had started and went to university. I also started doing digital fine art and sold my first prints.
Until this spring everything was okay... but then it struck me like a lighting bolt. I still wasn't satisfied with what I was doing, but couldn't figure out, what exactly it was that made me feel this way.
Then I went to an art show, where analog photography was displayed. And it looked so different...
So much more natural and pleasing to the eye.
The next days I tried everything, to copy those pictures digital by using photoshop until my fingers literally wouldn't go one anymore.
So I went to a store that is selling analog cameras and accessories. This feeling when I first touched the Mamiya RB67.. Awesome... One of the moments I certainly won't ever forget
So after my visit I had a RB67 with a 127mm lens and a 120film back, 10 roles of HP5 and a bunch of developing materials.
Well to finish with my long introduction:
Since then I shoot 80% of my work analog in black and white, discovered the joy of slowlyness and mindfull photography and simply love it.
Now I also own a 13x18cm Plaubel Profia which I'm very proud of and started building my own darkroom.
The next step will be my first analog exhibition with self made prints. Well it will take a long time, but that's my goal
I'm really sorry for telling you the whole story and
for my not that good english skill.
I'm happy to be here and to be part of this community.
There is so much to learn and information to gather, people to meet and fun to have.
