Good evening,

I'd like to introduce myself to the Apug-Community.

My name's Mathias, but people usually call me Mat.
I'm 23 yeard old and currently attendind university.

I started photography when I was 11 years old.
Back then my dad gave me his old Ricoh 35mm film camera as a present. One year later I got my first digital camera and started to shoot pictures every day.

With 16 I sold the first pictures and started a small photography business, to earn some extra cash while still attending school. Until then my photos were okayish, but never met my expectations fully.

After finishing school with 18, I went to Nepal for 1 year, to work as a volunteer. In this time I discovered a passion for photography that was much deeper than ever. I started thinking about things like composition, light and angels totally different than I did before. During this time I decided, that I wouldn't want to work as a photographer, who has to make a living out of the thing he loves. So back in Germany I finished the small business I had started and went to university. I also started doing digital fine art and sold my first prints.

Until this spring everything was okay... but then it struck me like a lighting bolt. I still wasn't satisfied with what I was doing, but couldn't figure out, what exactly it was that made me feel this way.
Then I went to an art show, where analog photography was displayed. And it looked so different...

So much more natural and pleasing to the eye.
The next days I tried everything, to copy those pictures digital by using photoshop until my fingers literally wouldn't go one anymore.

So I went to a store that is selling analog cameras and accessories. This feeling when I first touched the Mamiya RB67.. Awesome... One of the moments I certainly won't ever forget

So after my visit I had a RB67 with a 127mm lens and a 120film back, 10 roles of HP5 and a bunch of developing materials.

Well to finish with my long introduction:

Since then I shoot 80% of my work analog in black and white, discovered the joy of slowlyness and mindfull photography and simply love it.

Now I also own a 13x18cm Plaubel Profia which I'm very proud of and started building my own darkroom.

The next step will be my first analog exhibition with self made prints. Well it will take a long time, but that's my goal

I'm really sorry for telling you the whole story and
for my not that good english skill.

I'm happy to be here and to be part of this community.
There is so much to learn and information to gather, people to meet and fun to have .
I'm really excited!

Best wishes
Mat

Welcome!!

Thanks a lot flavio

Yeah nothing beats 6x7 when it comes medium format!

Hi Mat,

Great story! Welcome to APUG -- can't wait to see your photos sometime.

Hi Rachelle

Glad you like it and thanks a lot!
Well that is a little problematic at present time.
I don't own a scanner capable of scanning negatives.
I hope to get my enlarger in january, so that I can simply scan the prints

Welcome to Apug, Mat!

Welcome Mat! I think you've found a good place to hang around ...

And Plaubel ... the pride of Frankfurt a. Main! 13x18 is a great format by the way.

Thanks for welcoming me

Well 6x9 or 6x12 isn't bad... bad it ain't 6x7

@Jerevan: It is indeed ! It's so much fun to work with this camera and esthetically 13x18 (5x7) is really nice
I prefer it over most other large formats but 8x10.

Welcome!
Thanks for sharing what got you to film.
Those are pretty much my sentiments as well.

Welcome to APUG

We can always use more Mat(t)s.

Hope you get as much out of this place as I do.

@OptiKen: Thank you! Nice to hear, that I'm not the only crazy person a long this line

@Sirius Glass: Thank you!

@MattKing: Thank you!
Well the more the mattier
I'm sure I will! There is so much to learn and discuss,
I read so many thinks where I will have to shoot you guys with loads of questions  And I hope I can give something in return!

Thank you

Thank you!

I shall hope so

Welcome Mat, and please keep thinking about composition and other things that make good and great pictures. Remember it is not the equipment but what you do with it that makes you a really good photographer. But, of course, you already know that......As my inlaws say: "Gruss"

Thanks a lot oldtimermetoo

I will try my best! Analogue makes it somehow easier (in my opinion) to look for thinks like composition. It is slowing down your process of picture taking. I plan every shot I do now. It's a great feeling not to work like a machine but rather like an artist. (Even though my images aren't that good so far  )

welcome Mat! the first 10,000 negatives are just practice..go for it!!
best peter

Thank you, Peter!
Well I've done 20 4x5 so far and maybe 100x 120 film..
So still a Baby
