Hello,

Do you have experience with long exposures on Ilfords BW negative films with strong ND filters (etc. Hitech 3,0 ND Pro Stop, Hitech standard ND 3,0, Lee Big Stopper, B+W 106 ND, B+W110 ND)? Long exposures in daytime for 1min., 2min. max 10 minutes.

I tried Ilford Pan F Plus with orange filter and Hitech 3,0 Pro Stop ND filter for this work. Ilford Pan F Plus, because is slow film ISO 50 and with Perceptol EI 25 an this film have poor reciprocity charakteristic. This reciprocity failure is benefit for this work. I rated Pan F Plus as EI 25 and developed with Perceptol 1+1.

But, I have a problem with Ilford Pan F Plus and Perceptol 1+1. I developed Ilford Pan F Plus with Perceptol 1+1 (perceptol + destiled water, water from reverse osmosis) 10min 30s and 20 Celsius degrees, aborted with destiled water from osmosis (2x this water), fixed with Foma Fomafix 3min, washed with drinking water 10min, at the end wraped to Foma Fotonal with destiled water from osmosis 2min. All solutions were tempered to 20 Celsius degrees.

I got this result after scanning. This structure is also on negative. Picture is original resized to 800x600. Is it normal? I am bit disappointed wiht this result. This is a long expsure with Hitech 3,0 ND Pro Stop. Exposure time was 2min 30s. Scanned with Noritsu S-4 and then scanned with Nikon Coolscan 9000ED with nearly same result as Noritsu.

Do you have any pictures with long exposure on Ilfords BW films? I would like to see some works and discuss about this point. I would like to discuss about good choice of strong ND filter for BW negative.

Thank you.

what's the problem, exactly?
I don't see it.

The structure of sky section. Maybe this look is normal, but for me is like rotten, no smooth. Maybe, this is normal look for long exposures on BW films. This is my first try with long exposures.

Difficult to diagnose your problem as it is hard to tell specifically how you are rinsing after development, and I have no experience with your particular fixer. Also not sure how you are washing the film during the 10 minute wash. I'm assuming Fotonal is a wetting agent.

Based on the scan it could be as simple as dust sticking to the film during drying.

Whatever the issue is, I can tell you it is not a problem with PanF+, nor is it a problem with Perceptol. It isn't related to long exposures either. Ilford films have no problem with long exposures. As you adjust exposure times for reciprocity failure, you can expose as long as you want.

Rinsing with portable water 20 Celsius degrees. I placed developing tank bellow water cock and I flowed water to central shaft in developing tank. Fotonal is wetting agent. Dust? Dust yes, but no on whole negative

I have a one question about ND filter. I have only Hitech 3,0 ND Pro Stop filter. I used this filter on digital camera. This filter creates blue color cast on digital pictures. Is this color cast problem with BW negative?

On BW film; there will be no problem with blue colour cast.:whistling:
Don't forget that the sky is moving during your exposure.

I've used Delta 100 for many long exposures. No problems.

I'm still not sure what you don't like, specifically about the sky. If you are talking about the grain, keep in mind Perceptol is not a sharp developer, so you will not get very crisp grain at 1+1.

Maybe grain, maybe rendering blured sky. This is my first try with long esposures on film. Do you have a recomendation for developer? Could I see your pictures with long exposures or do you have only paper photos, please?

Thak you.

During these long exposures the clouds are moving effectively creating underexposure to the sky. The scanning may be exacerbating the grain effect also. If you made a print in the darkroom, burning the sky in with appropriate contrast, I think the results would be more to your liking.

Well, i did use this filter, B+W 3.0 ND, but i am sorry that i always say i have experience in digital, so on my digital shots with this filter i don't like the overall mostly the sky look, so i don't know if it will be worse with film, but i can't tell until i give it a try, hope i can have that time to do it and show the results.

I would like to find reciprocity characteristic for Rollei ATP 1.1. I am looking for this characteristic, but I cant find it. Maybe, this film could be a good idea for long exposures. No Ilford film, but......

Another picture form third roll Pan F Plus developed in ID11 1+1, EI 25, time 8min 30s. I bought this roll in same time as first and second roll.

Same result as result from first and second roll. I cant believe it. In my opinion this structure is not normal from this film.

All pictures with orange and Hitech 3,0 ND Pro Stop filter.

I bought next roll from another seller and I will test this roll!

Have you tried using 2 polarising filters instead of ND filters? It may give you more control.

I tried this technique with 35mm film. For Carl Zeiss Flektogon 50/4 MC is not good technique (very large front lens diameter 86 mm, very expensive filters).

I will test another roll. Maybe, this is a problem with rolls form same batch or problem with this filter for BW negative films. I dont know at this time.

Wish if we have clouds then i will give it a try and show you, also i do only with MF[120] format, i may give it a try on something else rather than cloudy sky.

Your test will be very helpful for me. Do you have a Ilford Pan F Plus 120?

Ofcourse, this film is one of Ilford favorite films i like [including to HP5+ and FP4+], i did use this film before and have great results, but never used it for long exposure with filters.

I tested another roll Pan F Plus, today (roll from another seller). I did several pictores of same scene (short exposure, long exposure, with ND filter, with filters, without filters). Dynamic range of the scene was 6,5 - 7 EV. I am a very courios for result.

Pictures will be added today evening or tomorrow.
